Manchester United make third signing of the summer with Nemanja Matic arriving from Chelsea

Manchester United have announced the signing of Nemanja Matic on a three-year contract with the option of a further year to be added on meaning he could remain at the club until 2021. Reports suggest the player, coming from Chelsea will cost United £40 million, a lot less than the reported £50 million figure the media have led United supporters to believe would be the final cost of the transfer.

Speaking about his new signing, United manager Jose Mourinho said:

“Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player.

“I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new number 31.”

Speaking about his new club, Nemanja Matic said:

“I am delighted to have joined Manchester United. To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.

“This is a very exciting time for the club and I am looking forward to playing my part in creating more history for this great club.”

Matic was one of the players involved in Chelsea’s Premier League win during the 2014/15 season which Mourinho guiding the club to victory that season. Matic turns 29 on Tuesday and despite his age, he will strengthen United severely and a defensive minded midfielder was exactly what Mourinho has been looking for ahead of the new season. The Portuguese manager will now be looking to sign an attacking midfielder who can play on the wing.

United might just be able to challenge in the Premier League this coming season, which is what Mourinho and his side will be expected to do. United won three trophies last season, two of them major honours with the FA Community Shield, the EFL Cup (now the Carabao Cup) and the UEFA Europa League. Back in the UEFA Champions League this season, could Mourinho and his side do the impossible and win the elite European competition just like he did with Porto the season after winning the Europa League?
