Manchester United match Inter Milan’s asking price for Ivan Perisic

Manchester United have matched Inter Milan’s valuation for Croatian winger Ivan Perisic according to reports in Italy. BeIN Sport reporter Tancredi Palmeri has suggested that United will match the €50 million valuation (£44.3 million) for Perisic, also adding €5 million (£4.4 million) in add-ons, meaning a total transfer amount of €55 million, which for a 28-year-old is steep, but most transfer this summer already have been steep. Even Swansea City was £50 million for Gylfi Sigurdsson. United manager Jose Mourinho has been after Perisic all summer to fortify his wing positions, an area United saw reduced even more with the departure of Memphis Depay in the January transfer window.

The fact that Perisic, a player who normally plays on the left-wing, can also play on the right-wing or even behind a striker, has suggested that Anthony Martial could once again leave the Old Trafford club. The rumours have been here before and will no doubt return again. I’m not sure why Mourinho would strengthen an area only to weaken it again with another departure. That just does not make much sense. With the reports of Inter’s valuation supposedly being met, it is not yet sure of the Italian club will still do business with United who have been in pursuit of Perisic since before the end of last season, which shows how much Mourinho wants the player to strengthen his side ahead of a season where he will be expected to make his team compete in the Premier League.

United announced the £75 million signing of Romelu Lukaku on Monday evening, which saw reports leak to the press on Thursday morning with the fee and an apparent agreement being suggested, which were played down by Everton, then a day later it was reported that Chelsea, the team Lukaku was expected to sign for, had matched the fee. On Saturday morning, United announced they had agreed a fee with Everton for the player, subject to a medical and personal terms, which were all agreed and the player trained for the first time with his teammates on Monday, ahead of the first pre-season match against LA Galaxy on Saturday evening in Los Angeles, the early hours of Sunday morning in the United Kingdom.

Mourinho has seemingly gone big this summer in signing Victor Lindelof to strengthen the defence, Lukaku to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and if this move happens, Perisic to add some speed, creativity and some successful crosses from the wing giving United another option with width, something they missed out on last season with Memphis on the decline and Martial just not settling during his second season. Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore and now football pundit put a tweet out on Twitter earlier on Monday evening suggesting that he spoke to ‘one of the biggest football agent’ and he was told that United were still in the market for some more marquee name this summer, which suggests the spending will continue post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

United have been linked to James Rodriguez for much of the summer with Manchester United the only team he would leave Real Madrid for, despite Bayern Munich currently being in discussion for the Colombian. United also seem to be linked to Neymar, which is probably nothing, like it was during the past few years. There are seemingly other players on United’s radar, according to Collymore at least, which could be a wind up as far as I know. One thing is for sure, the next few weeks will be telling as whoever Mourinho wants to bring in this summer will need to play a part in pre-season with five matches being played in the United States of America, one in Norway and another in Dublin before the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia.
