Manchester United must wait a year to sign Brazilian midfielder

Manchester United have reportedly been told that they must wait another year to sign Benfica’s Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca. Last week it was reported that United had ‘agreed personal terms‘ with the player, which may or may not be true. Turkish side Besiktas, who had agreed a deal, albeit last summer, to keep the talented Brazilian on loan for two years, had seemingly derailed United’s approach for the player, which may force United to wait or even find another target this summer. Talisca is a talented player and at just 23 he seems to be heading in the right direction for the big time, which he could reach with United, should they find an amicable solution for the transfer this summer or wait another year to sign him.

The Sun have reported that Talisca has a dream to play for Manchester United and manager Jose Mourinho is interested in the player, which may well be true with the Portuguese manager looking for reinforce his squad ahead of the new season, with creativity and a lack of goals hitting home during the past season, especially in the Premier League, with United ending up in sixth place for the very first time. Next season, Mourinho will be expected to launch a title challenge taking on the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal – all of the teams finishing ahead of United. Talisca could well be a player to cause a stir in United’s midfield, creating chances, assisting goals and of course scoring them.

Umut Guner, president of Besiktas’ transfer committee fired a shot in United’s direction after speculation surfaced last week that the Old Trafford club were interested in the player who spent last season on loan in the Süper Lig, scoring 17 goals in all competitions last season, 13 of which were scored in the Turkish league, of which he made 22 appearances last term. Guner, speaking to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, said:

“There is no deal with Manchester United or anyone else in place. We agreed to a two-year deal with Benfica. The loan did have a clause that the option [for a second year] had to be activated, which we did. Talisca will stay at Besiktas on loan for another season. Reports claiming that he can be signed for his €25m (£22m) release clause are false, he has a deal with us. If a club wants to sign him now they will have to wait another 12 months.”

Talisca does not seem intent on missing out playing in the Premier League, possibly with Manchester United as he has previously spoken about playing for the Old Trafford club, which is where the talk of it being a dream move seems to come from. Speaking to Globoesporte, Talisca said:

“It’s a love that exists, I will not lie. It’s a dream, something all players want. But it [a move] does not depend on me alone. It depends on Benfica, my representatives, who are dealing with the situation. But soon, soon, they will have the news there. It’s something that all players want [a move to Manchester United]. I had a good season and, as I said, his [Mourinho’s] love is old and I like his work as well. I hope everything works out.”

Whether United manager to get a deal across the line this summer looks like a tough challenge with the Turkish club holding firm on the player they have on loan for another year. Saying that, If United really want the player and Mourinho wants to add him to his squad this summer, there is always a solution, which would probably involve some cogs being buttered somewhere, in the form of money of course. We shall see what develops in this transfer story, but at this moment in time, it looks like Manchester United will have to look elsewhere.
