Manchester United open Paul Pogba transfer talks with Real Madrid – reports

Manchester United has opened talks with Real Madrid over the transfer of Paul Pogba this summer, according to reports. For months now, the speculation of Pogba leaving the Old Trafford club has been rife, but it had a history before that. Last summer, after enduring a rocky relationship with former United manager Jose Mourinho, Pogba was linked to Barcelona.

This summer though, with Zinedine Zidane back at the Santiago Bernabeu, and the praise the Frenchman has shown for Pogba, the rumours have gathered pace and it could only be a matter of time before something develops. Although there have been contradicting reports which have suggested United did not want to sell Pogba, a club would never admit they wanted to sell a player, as it would lower the price.

It is suggested that United would be looking for around £150 million for the Frenchman this summer, selling the player they bought for £89 million three summers ago for a £61 million profit. Real Madrid has been busy of late, securing Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, and Rodrygo with speculation linking them to Ferland Mendy. The acquisition of Pogba could end a costly summer for the Spanish club, who have fallen down the pecking order in La Liga of late.

Pogba, 26, has endured much criticism from United supporters after many poor performances for the club last season, especially towards the end. It seemed like the player did not want to be at the club or play for them. He was even called out by a supporter in the Stretford End after the last match at Old Trafford last season, a 2-0 defeat to already-relegated Cardiff City.

With the speculation continuing day by day, for me, it seems to be a case of when, not if, Pogba leave the Old Trafford club. There are reports which suggest that Christian Eriksen could be chosen ahead of Pogba this summer, with the money that has been spent by Zidane already, however, this may just be a tactic to get United into negotiating with the clu for the transfer of Pogba, it is Real Madrid we are talking about here, they have many different tactics to ensure they get what they want.

There are also suggestions in the media which state that Gareth Bale will be offered in order to lower the fee paid for Pogba this summer, if he does leave United, but with the Welshman on a reported £600,000 per week, that would not be great business for United, who still have Alexis Sanchez on a huge weekly wage at the club. You would be seeing more than £1 million a week being paid to two players – that’s ludicrous.
