Manchester United ‘request a meeting’ as Bruno Fernandes speculation continues this summer – this will be a saga

Portuguese newspaper, A Bola once again carried another story linking Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes with Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been linked with the 24-year-old who is currently training with Portugal ahead of the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Switzerland this evening.

Last week there were reports suggesting that United wanted to sign the player ‘within a week’, obviously that has not happened and could be more hearsay. Yesterday, reports stated that United have offered €80 million for the midfielder, €55 million now and €25 million in bonuses.

A Bola talked about Tottenham Hotspur now being interested in the player, presumably because of Christian Eriksen’s comments about wanting a new challenge this summer. However, the article, according to Sport Witness, is weighted towards United.

Interest by Liverpool in the player has also been talked about, although very briefly. Liverpool has also not done anything about it so perhaps they are not really interested in the player. It is suggested that United have announced their intention on signing Fernandes this summer, requesting a meeting with Sporting to get a deal on the table. Contrary to reports from yesterday, although they were from a different paper.

Obviously, nothing is going to happen quickly here. Portugal faces Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League semi-final this evening (KO 19:45 BST) and England faces the Netherlands on Thursday evening (KO 19:45 BST). The third-place playoff will be played on Sunday (KO 14:00 BST) with the final being played at 19:00 BST.

The international transfer window for English clubs does not open until Tuesday 11 June 2019, so there is no rush to get something sorted. From there, with Solskjaer wanting transfer completed before the club heads to Australia for the first part of their pre-season tour, the first match to be played on the 13 July against Perth Glory.

Former United manager, Jose Mourinho, spoke to Eleven Sports recently about Fernandes, suggesting that he was surprised by the player this season. The 24-year-old scored a lot of goals for his club, which has seen many clubs hold an interest in the player this summer. Mourinho said:

“I was surprised by the season of Bruno Fernandes. It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player.

“It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all. He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

“He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there.”

The report in A Bola states that United are willing to spend €70-€80 million on Fernandes this summer, so at least that corresponds to the reports from other sources recently. However, it does not mean it is in fact true. Manchester City has reported not given up on trying to sign Fernandes this summer but Atletico Madrid, another team interested in him may have to miss out as the player would like to play in the Premier League.
