Manchester United see £70 million bid for Alvaro Morata rejected – reports

Manchester United have bid £70 million (€80 million) for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata according to Goal. The reports have been carried by The Mirror and The Sun also with the former getting the reports wrong, which suggests Mirror reporter Alex Smith who went with the headline “Manchester United ‘fail’ with £79m bid for Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata”, just did not put the work in when reading the article. More attention to detail Mr. Smith. Website Goal actually reported that the £70.2 million bid for Morata from United was rejected by the Madrid club who are holding out for €90 million, which is around £79 million, not that United had failed with a bid of that amount. Journalism hey, what has it become?

The Sun reported on Monday that Thursday was the day United had planned to announce Morata as a United player, but with that actually being tomorrow, it does not seem all that realistic to me. I don’t like it when people report particular days in a transfer as that day seems to come and go. You may as well state that the player is going to sign for Manchester United on a day containing the word ‘day’ or that he will sign for United when the sun has risen or set. That is how pathetic these things seem to me right now. There is cause for concern though as United will head to Los Angeles on Sunday ahead of their pre-season tour and whilst it is not hard for a player to arrive separately like Sergio Romero did two years ago, it still makes supporters worry the club will miss out, again.

Morata was signed by Real Madrid last summer after the club activated his buyout clause which had been inserted in his contract which cost the La Liga and UEFA Champions League holders €32 million (£26.3 million). A year later the club look set to make a considerable profit on the player, which is what Real Madrid like, money! On Monday it was also reported that Morata’s agent and his father met officials from the club for around about an hour, trying to get something sorted in terms of the player leaving the club with Manchester United his chosen destination. The player does not want to return to pre-season with Real Madrid, ideally wanting a move to be sorted before then.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to have a deal in place before the squad leaves for Los Angeles on Sunday, which may be cutting it fine but in the summer of 2015, United signed both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin hours before heading to the United States of America on the club’s pre-season tour and their defence of the International Champions Cup which Louis van Gaal had won the previous summer, beating Liverpool in the final in Miami. United’s first match of pre-season will be played on Saturday 15th July 2017, which will actually be the early hours of Sunday 16th July in the United Kingdom, which will be fun.

Morata scored 20 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, coming off the bench for the majority of the season, which suggests why he wants to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. With United looking for attacking reinforcements after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was released this summer, there is a big hole to fill in the squad with Marcus Rashford being the clubs only recognised striker with Anthony Martial playing in the left-wing position. United have been linked to many names this summer with Ivan Perisic, Nemanja Matic and Morata still credibly linked to the Theatre of Dreams, but I am sure many more names will be added over the coming weeks.
