Manchester United set to miss out on German star?

A whole host of stars have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this coming summer, and with just cause; Manchester United need to get busy in the transfer market. But as the period of exchange draws closer, it would appear that one such star could be about to slip the net. A German in a much sought after central role.

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Sami Khedira looks set to snub a move to England in favour of one back to his homeland and Schalke. Reports allegedly coming from Germany claim Schalke have entered talks with the Real Madrid midfielder in a bid to secure his signature when his contract expires this summer. Schalke have expressed a great deal of interest in signing the man frozen out of first team duties at Madrid since revealing his desires to seek pastures greener, and things from a United perspective have been far quieter on that front.

However, that is not to say there is no interest on Louis van Gaals part. Nor United on the whole. There has been an effort to sign the midfielder previously – back at the start of David Moyes’ reign, though the bid launched approximately 30 seconds before the window shut was always ambitious  (understating it slightly). And it may be a sign that interest remains at least at boardroom level.

With talk of a move to Manchester not really at the forefront of the headlines, the story comes as something of a surprise. Ilkay Gundogan has seemed to be the subject of choice with regards to solving the problems at the heart of United’s midfield, but this doesn’t mean a bid couldn’t, and shouldn’t, be launched. When push comes to shove, signing a player of Khedira’s undoubted quality on a free transfer is not an everyday occurrence. And at the age of 28, he has plenty to give to a squad that is looking to move forwards towards the lofty heights of success once more.

With Michael Carrick advancing in years (and when out injured his influence is a HUGE miss) and hasn’t much more left in the tank. Ilkay Gundogan, if signed, has fitness worries in regards to a long-term back injury, and the same goes for another target Kevin Strootman. Potentially a move for Khedira could be exactly what Louis van Gaal needs. He would add muscle in the middle, he could sit in front of the defence and marshal proceedings. Daley Blinds pace is questionable and has been found out on numerous occasions, this wouldn’t be an issue with Khedira.

I think if a move could be engineered for his services then it should absolutely be pursued. At 28 he is in his prime, a free transfer would be absolutely perfect as it would only cost in wages, and as far as taking a gamble goes, this is a reasonably safe bet. A defensive midfielder is what United need, one who isn’t afraid to put themselves about, and in Khedira that is exactly what would be bought. There could be a German revolution at Old Trafford this summer, and having Khedira involved wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.
