Manchester United sign Romelu Lukaku on a five-year contract

Manchester United have completed their second signing of the summer with the announcement that former Everton and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has signed for the Old Trafford club. The news of United’s firm interest in the player came out of the blue with the Belgian expected to return to Chelsea, but reports surfaced on Thursday morning suggesting that United and Everton had agreed on a £75 million deal for the player, which was then played down by the Goodison Park club. Wayne Rooney returned to Everton at the weekend, being unveiled at a press conference on Monday afternoon wearing the number ten shirt for the club, Lukaku’s former number. Lukaku will wear the number nine shirt for United, recently vacated by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Lukaku has signed a five-year contract with United which includes an option for a sixth year to be added, something which has been the norm for new signings and contracts at United over the past few years. Last season, Lukaku scored 25 goals in the Premier League, which is something United need to be doing next season as with winning the FA Community Shield, the EFL Cup (now Carabao Cup) and the UEFA Europa League, the Premier League was where United fell short in. Perhaps Lukaku and his new teammates can help to change that this coming season. The 24-year-old has been on holiday in Los Angeles with Paul Pogba with the players due to meet the rest of their teammates at training on Monday. United manager Jose Mourinho spoke about Lukaku, saying:

“Romelu is a natural fit for Manchester United. He is a big personality and a big player. It is only natural that he wants to develop his career at the biggest club. He will be a great addition to the group and I know they will make him very welcome. I am really looking forward to working with him again.”

Speaking to the official Manchester United website about signing for the Old Trafford club, Lukaku said:

“I would like to start by thanking Everton and the fans for the last four wonderful seasons, I have made some special friends and we have shared some amazing moments. However, when Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down. You could see the fight, determination and the spirit in this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that. I cannot wait to run out at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans but before that pre-season is where the hard work starts and I am looking forward to that first training session.”

United will now be able to prepare for their first pre-season match, in which Lukaku and Victor Lindelof could make their first appearances in a Manchester United shirt. United will face LA Galaxy on Saturday 15th July, early hours of Sunday in the United Kingdom, before facing Real Salt Lake on Monday 17th July, early hours of Tuesday in the UK. United will then take part in the International Champions Cup where they will face Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona before heading back to Manchester. There will be two further pre-season matches against Valerenga in Norway and Sampdoria in Ireland. United will then take on Real Madrid for the second time this summer to contest for the UEFA Super Cup, probably Lukaku’s first competitive match, which will be played in Macedonia. United face West Ham United at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener on Sunday 13th August 2017, KO 16:00 BST.
