Manchester United target reveals he is close to his comeback after injury

Borussia Dortmund midfielder İlkay Gündoğan has revealed that he is edging closer for full fitness after a back injury had ruled him out for almost a year. Manchester United were linked with the German international earlier in the year, but a recurrence of his back injury scuppered any plans to sign the player in the summer. Many saw Gündoğan as the answer to United’s midfield woes, but the signing of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind has shored up the midfield a little and that will be adequate for this season, but if the club return to European football next season another central midfielder would be key.

Speaking about his impending return to football reported by the Daily Star, Gündoğan said:

“I feel that I’m edging ever-closer to my former self.

“My comeback isn’t too far away any more. I could be back after the international break.

“I have already pencilled out the entire day and I will thoroughly enjoy my comeback. I felt like a 90-year-old when I had just picked up the injury.

“I never considered the option that I could be forced to retire from football, but it was obviously the worst experience of my career.”

Gündoğan is a decent central midfielder and providing he does return to full fitness at the best of his ability, it will give Manchester United another option to strengthen their midfield in January or in the summer. At this moment in time Kevin Strootman is the only player that has been linked to the club, apart from Arturo Vidal, with both also suffering from injuries of their own, that could play on their abilities to feature at the top of their game, which could be a struggle, especially after a long-term injury. Apart from the three players mentioned, Louis van Gaal could continue to promote from within with Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell continuing to impress at youth level.
