Manchester United to battle with Paris Saint-Germain for Brazilian midfielder?

Manchester United will reportedly battle Paris Saint-Germain for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer. Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to add the 25-year-old playmaker to his squad ahead of the new season, which his side will be expected to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title. Pep Guardiola’s City were also keen on the Brazilian but have since ruled themselves out of the race for him this summer, apparently.

The Manchester Evening News has suggested the French champions will jump ahead of United in the face for Fred as they are short of defensive midfielders with Adrien Rabiot the only youthful player in that position. However, PSG does have both Thiago Motta, 35, and Lassana Diarra, 33, in their squad.

It has been reported that Fred has a £53 million release clause as part of his Shakhtar Donetsk contract, which expires in the summer of 2013, which could be a huge fee for the Parisien side, who paid just short of £200 million for Neymar last summer and will need to pay around £150 million plus to complete the signing of Kylian Mbappe this summer. Financial Fair Play could end up scuppering any potential deal for Fred, or any other player unless PSG is going to sell any of their assets.

It is suggested that both United and PSG may wait to see the player in action in the FIFA World Cup this summer after he was announced in the final 23-man squad for his country earlier today. United will need at least one new midfielder this summer after Michael Carrick hung up his playing boots in the final Premier League match of the season, a 1-0 victory over Watford on Sunday. Marouane Fellaini could also leave the club this summer, on the expiry of his contract, which will mean Mourinho will need to bring in two new midfielders.

It has been suggested that Carrick will have a hand in replacing himself in the squad with Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic a player the club has been linked to for some time now, and one who will have a massive transfer fee, along with many of the top clubs in Europe credited with having an interest in him.

I am sure there will be more developments in the chase for Fred this summer. It would seem he is one of the names consistently linked to the Old Trafford club at the moment with Jean-Michael Seri also linked many months ago, now seemingly a target for Arsenal rather than United with his name not being credibly linked to the Theatre of Dreams for some time now. United will need to get their midfield right this summer though, Carrick will be a player who will be missed and his level of experience and quality will need to be matched.
