Manchester United to swoop for Juventus defender Alex Sandro?

Manchester United are reportedly planning another summer swoop for a Juventus star, two years after the club secured the services of Paul Pogba for a world record fee. This time around it is Alex Sandro who is attracting the interest of United and Jose Mourinho ahead of a summer overhaul of some of the problem positions at the Theatre of Dreams. Sandro, 27, has been monitored for some time now with the left-back position at the club uncertain with Ashley Young ahead of Luke Shaw, something which showed the benefits against Liverpool on Saturday.

Mourinho had the Brazilian fullback scouted as recently as the UEFA Champions League victory over Tottenham Hotspur during the week, according to the Mirror. It is suggested that Matteo Darmian could be a counterweight in the prospective deal with Juventus keen on the Italian defender. Darmian signed for United nearly two years ago under the management of Louis van Gaal, looking like a great signing early into his career, but then losing that momentum which saw him being compared to United legend Gary Neville.

Darmian heading to Turin could see the Italian giants allow Sandro to leave, still capitalising from the player they signed from Porto in 2015 for around £22 million. Sandro was linked to Chelsea last summer and came close to making the move to the reigning Premier League champions. It makes me wonder whether these reports are true as I am sure Chelsea would still be interested in the player but it all depends on the security of Antonio Conte, who has been under fire for a few months now, especially as Chelsea are left with a big fight to finish in the top for this season.

I like Luke Shaw and I want to see him succeed at United but one thing that might be holding him back is the fact that there is no senior player in his position for him to learn from. Many will suggest that if United did sign Sandro, or another experienced left-back, it would be the end of Shaw at the club but that does not have to be the case. United need depth in their squad just as much as any other team in the top flight. Also having someone senior to Shaw, in the same position, would be beneficial for the English left-back.

Sandro is reportedly everything that Mourinho is seeking in a left-back; strong, quick, and dependable. Shaw can offer this too but the fact he still seems to be behind Ashley Young, despite the 32-year-old not being a left-back leaves me wondering. Mourinho has praised Shaw and suggested that he is the best left-back at the club, the only left-back at that, which seems to suggest the Portuguese manager still rates the player. A little competition for places should bring out the best of both players, leaving United in a much better position. Rotation is an option too.

The Sun has reported that Sandro would most likely cost around £70 million, which is a massive transfer fee for a left-back – one which will see the media criticise the club for spending another big chunk of cash with teams like Manchester City having a ceiling price for a player and seemingly make these options work. United, though, have the money and it is much better spent than being siphoned out of the club by the Glazers. Sandro currently earns around £145,000 per week with United ready to offer him more to secure the player.

I am sure there will be many more reports like this in the coming weeks and months as we head closer to the summer transfer window. This summer United and Mourinho will need to get their business done quickly, maybe even ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The transfer window will close before the opening Premier League match of the 2018/19 season, giving less time to get deals across the line. However, the transfer window will open much sooner, on the 17th May until the 9th August 2018.
