Manchester United’s Argentinian defender Marcos Rojo has arrived back in Manchester this evening, where he is currently living in the Lowry Hotel, which is where many United players including Luke Shaw and Radamel Falcao are currently living, not to mention that manager Louis van Gaal is currently hauled up in the hotel as he looks for a property in the area. Last week Rojo was granted his UK work permit and he is eligible to make his Manchester United and Old Trafford debut on Sunday against Queens Park Rangers, which is something that could be needed due to the state of the clubs defence at this moment in time, due to injury and loss of form. Chris Smalling is currently on the sidelines and Phil Jones was injured playing for England on Monday evening, something that yet is unconfirmed as something that could keep him out of Sunday’s match.
Rojo signed for United three weeks ago and worked hard to get his work permit issues sorted out as soon as possible. He has played for Argentina in the last week, facing World Champions Germany in Düsseldorf, beating them 4-2 after club and country team-mate Angel di Maria assisted in three goals, before scoring his own in a Man of the Match performance. Rojo played well and it was something that United supporters could not wait to see him do for their club, that could happen on Sunday. It will be a debut for many at Old Trafford, which Luke Shaw looking to make his first competitive match for his club, Rojo playing for the first time.
Daley Blind, who signed last week could also make his debut with Radamel Falcao expected to make his also. Angel di Maria has already played for United, but this will be his first time playing at Old Trafford for his new club. Speaking last week, Rojo stated his desperation and desire to play for his new club, by saying:
“I am desperate to get onto the field and play because I have not been able to step onto Old Trafford [yet].
“My life has changed a lot. I am very happy to be at Manchester United, a top team in the world, sharing a dressing room with players like Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Angel Di Maria and now Radamel Falcao.
“This is a very important step in my career as a player and as a person. Everything that has happened to me since the World Cup has been a dream.”
Many feel that with the defensive qualities of both Rojo and Blind added to the squad this summer, it could be a change from the 3-4-1-2 formation adopted by Louis van Gaal when he picked his first side back in July when they beat LA Galaxy 7-0 in their first pre-season friendly in the United States of America. Personally I would like to see four at the back, with two of those being Rafael da Silva and Luke Shaw, the others being two out of Rojo, Jones, Smalling or Jonny Evans. The fact is that Rojo, despite being hot-headed, will bring some defensive qualities to the squad and I am hoping we will see just why Louis van Gaal signed him this Sunday!
As advised in the weekly blog written by Juan Mata, the full Manchester United squad will nee for their first training session together. We will see the likes of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao meet up with current players including Mata, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and more. I am sure there will be some good images available on Thursday that will show the players training together. We will bring you them once we have them.
