Manchester United’s midfielders need to step up

Although Manchester United have had reasonable success this season, as we enter the last couple of months of the season, it seems Jose Mourinho is somewhat unhappy with the state of his midfield.

There has been strong speculation in recent weeks that the United boss is looking to revamp the middle of the park in the summer, which means the current crop really need to step up in the last few games if they want to remain an integral part of United’s rebuilding process.

As Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season, and become a part of United’s coaching staff, Mourinho told Manchester Evening News; “We need to try and sign a midfield player because we are going to lose Michael Carrick, and we need balance in the team.”

However, the names that are being touted as possible replacements for the 36-year-old are players who will demand to play regular first team football. Names such as Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl and Napoli’s Jorginho are just a couple of names that are being mentioned, and both are vital components of successful sides, so why would they leave to warm the bench at Old Trafford.

With speculation flying about and the United boss even confirming they are in the market for a midfielder, it is time United’s midfield steps up this season and fight for their place in the team. Apart from new addition Nemanja Matic, United’s midfielders have been far from consistent this season.

Marouane Fellaini and fan favourite Ander Herrera have been strongly linked with moves away from Old Trafford this season, and that has somewhat affected their form and place in the side, only really appearing in cup competitions or coming off the bench. They are players who could possibly make way for incomings in the summer unless they prove to Mourinho they can remain integral for seasons to come.

After a strong start to the season, club record signing, Paul Pogba has dropped off in recent weeks to the point where Mourinho has dropped him completely from the side and his future has been cast into doubt. It has been speculated that there has been a falling out between the United boss and the Frenchman, and Pogba feels he is being used as somewhat of a ‘scapegoat’ for United’s recent poor form.

Nevertheless, issues appear to be resolved and Pogba has returned the starting line-up, at a time where United’s season is back on track after a slight blip. At the end of the day, Pogba is a player who Mourinho wants to rely on and lead the club back to the top, so his position isn’t under threat, but recent weeks have shown Mourinho isn’t afraid to drop his best players if they aren’t performing.

After making his Premier League debut at the end of last season against Crystal Palace, who’d have thought a year on local lad Scott McTominay would be an integral part of United’s line-up. The 21-year-old has been a revelation this season, only really play because of the lack of form of other midfielders, but hasn’t he grasped his opportunity. Nemanja Matic told Sky Sports recently McTominay “will be a big player for the club, for years to come.” Were a new midfielder to come in, his place in the squad is surely something that wouldn’t be affected and he will continue to be a big part of Mourinho’s plans for next season.

After an inconsistent few months for United’s midfielders now is the time that they must start fighting for their futures at Old Trafford, as Mourinho’s plans for the summer already appear to be in place. This summer could signal a changing of the guard as the United boss prepares his side for an attack on the League next season, and players need to decide whether they want to be a part of it.
