Marcos Rojo expected to leave Manchester United for Everton this summer – reports

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is reportedly closing in on a move to Everton, days after he was linked to Premier League new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Manchester Evening News has reported that the Goodison Park club are seeking to sign a central defender ahead of the closure of the transfer window a week on Thursday.

United are currently linked to both Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire, and if you believe the Twitter rumours, Yerry Mina, which I feel is more of a red herring. New Everton manager Marco Silva was Rojo’s manager at Sporting Lisbon before he left to join United in a £16 million move in the summer of 2014. Many would suggest that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones should be ahead of Rojo exiting the Old Trafford club.

The Argentinian would have been entering the final year of his contract this summer but he signed a new contract in March, which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2021. Since signing his new contract, Rojo made two appearances; in the 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on the 4 May and the 1-0 victory over Watford on the 13 May. Rojo had made 107 appearances, starting 95 and coming off the bench 12 times.

On signing his new contract in March, United manager Jose Mourinho spoke about the player putting his body on the line for the club and that he had some from strength to strength whilst under his management. However, he was not going to be present on the clubs pre-season tour of the United States of America due to a physical problem. Speaking back in March, Mourinho said:

“Marcos has gone from strength to strength over the past couple of seasons. He is always ready to put his body on the line for this club.”

If this move goes through, it will be a shock departure for many United supporters, especially in the fact that both Smalling and Jones seem set to remain at the club. However, with them both being English and a number of English players needing to be within a squad to fulfil Premier League and even UEFA Champions League regulations, not to mention the wages the pair are on at the club, it is probably why Rojo seems to be leaving.

United previously had a frosty relationship with Everton, ever since David Moyes and Ed Woodward put in a derisory and insulting £28 million bid for both Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines in the summer of 2013. However, in the years gone by, the relationship has healed. United have done deals with the Merseyside club for Morgan Schneiderlin and Wayne Rooney, also signing Romelu Lukaku last summer.

Obviously, with another defender leaving this summer, Daley Blind left for Ajax a few weeks back, it would suggest that another player is close to being signed by the Old Trafford club, unless Mourinho has plans to promote from within with both Tim Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe playing during the pre-season tour of the USA, and will be expected to face Real Madrid in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
