Millen Baars all cleared for move to Manchester United

Manchester United have added another budding prospect to their U18 ranks in the likes of 16-year-old Dutch midfielder, Millen Baars. Typically favoring a position along the wings, his process in joining the club has been delayed since around the midway point of last season. After months of waiting for his international clearance, his move to Kieran McKenna’s burgeoning young squad has finally been approved.

Baars was named the captain of his youth team at Ajax but chose to follow in the footsteps of compatriots Tahith Chong and Timothy Fosu-Mensah in leaving Holland for a chance at glory one day under the lights at Old Trafford.

When José Mourinho took the helm at Manchester United in 2016, he removed all but one member of Louis van Gaal’s backroom – Marcel Bout. Bout was an opposition scout under the Dutchman, and in October of last year, he became the club’s chief scout. Millen Baars was one the prospects that managed to survive the regime change as well, managing to keep his dot blinking on United’s radar.

Baars’ father, while speaking with Dutch publication Noordhollands Dagblad, shared this about his son’s decision:

“There was interest from Italy, Portugal and England, but when he was at Chelsea and United to look, he knew he wanted to play in Manchester. He did not even see Arsenal, his choice was made.

“He played nine seasons in Amsterdam and he has always had the dream to play football in England.”

The young Dutchman still has a way to go to prove his mettle within the U18 squad. But It’s clear to see from his highlights – playing cross-field balls with pinpoint precision, taking on multiple defenders and crossing in a few dimes – that he’s got promise. Here’s hoping for a bright future in Manchester for the lad.
