Jose Mourinho interested in Chelsea midfielder?

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has been quite the journey, as a complete revamp of the position saw plenty of new arrivals. However, Old Trafford seems to need just one more midfielder to complete the puzzle. Newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho believes the solution to United’s continued midfield woes is Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, who experienced the best form of his career under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

Matic left Chelsea for Benfica in an exchange deal that sent David Luiz to Chelsea years ago, and, after some amazing form, Chelsea shelled out massive cash to allow Matic to return to Chelsea. It seemed a fantastic move from the off, and Matic experienced the best spell of his career in the first half of Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign. In that spell, Matic was considered the best player in the Premier League and arguably the best midfielder in the world, as his incredible presence alongside Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, was pivotal to Chelsea’s success.

In the second half of that season, Matic began to decline, and Chelsea suffered as a result. Dragging their way through the rest of the season, Chelsea still managed to scrape their way to the title, but Matic was all out of sorts. Much like the rest of Chelsea’s side, Matic declined massively in Chelsea’s 2015/16 campaign, and he was arguably one of the Premier League’s biggest underperformers of the season.

Now, with Mourinho sacked as Chelsea manager and Matic struggling to make the Chelsea lineup under Guus Hiddink, the Portuguese manager reportedly believes Matic can find his best form at United again. Seeing Matic alongside Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera could prove to be a ridiculously talented midfield, with a good blend of tenacity, composure, attacking, defending and physicality.

The problem, however, would be getting Matic to rediscover his form because it is hard to understand why he is struggling so much. Matic is very adept both physically and technically, so it is difficult to understand why he slumped so much. To ensure his success at United, Mourinho needs to know why Matic has struggled to reproduce the world class form that had him on the top of the world.

Matic’s relationship with Mourinho broke down towards the end of Mourinho’s Chelsea career, but Matic is reportedly keen enough to try and work out their problems if it means he has the chance to play for Manchester United.

Both Gianluca Di Marzio and Tancredi Palmeri have linked Matic with a move to Manchester United in recent days, and if he can reproduce his best form, he is the perfect tactical fit for United. Matic is one of the best aerial players in the Premier League, which addresses a massive weakness for United, and his ability to dribble the ball and take incredible efforts from long range is something United could use when struggling to break down deep defences.

While Matic possesses the potential to be a massive player for United, it seems like too large a risk for United to take given the timing and the fee of the transfer. Mourinho has joined United to bring success to the club as soon as possible, and while Matic is capable of this, he is also capable of flopping massively. While Matic may be the perfect tactical player for United, it seems like a right transfer wrong time-type deal for United. Perhaps, in a year’s time, if the club is in a more stable position, Matic would be the player to go for.
