Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hands Ed Woodward a deadline to sign Bruno Fernandes this summer – reports

The race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes is starting to hot up after reports in Portugal have suggested that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the clubs executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward a deadline to sign the Portuguese international this summer. There were reports on Friday that United was ready to launch a bid for the player.

This prospective transfer has been running for months now and it should be developing in pace now, despite the fact the player was involved in the UEFA Nations League a few weeks ago, which would see him, and his teammates, have a slightly longer holiday. United will soon be getting ready for their pre-season tour, of which they fly out to Australia early in July, ready for their first game on the 13 July, against Perth Glory.

Portuguese newspaper, Record has once again touted the interest in the play from both United and Tottenham Hotspur with a suggestion that United are in a better position then Spurs. The main thing being talked about though is that both teams, who are seen to be more interested than others in Fernandes, will not pay €70 million that Sporting wants for the 24-year-old this summer.

United, on Friday, was tipped to be ready to launch a £49 million bid for the player, which would be a good fee for Sporting, however, they will want as much as they can get. However, with both United are Spurs the only interested teams, who seem to have come forward with concrete interest, it could be a dangerous game for Sporting, especially if they demand more money for the player this summer.

It was once suggested that Liverpool and Manchester City held some interest in the player but despite reports contradicting, City reportedly briefed journalists that they had no interest in the player this summer. The agent of the player, Miguel Pinho was in England last week and it would seem that Solskjaer wants something to happen quickly, so the club can then move onto another target, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also tipped to move to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

It was speculated in the media that Solskjaer wanted to have his new signings completed before the 1 July, which is just a week tomorrow, so the squad was ready for pre-season, which starts the same week and then United heading to Australia only a matter of days later. The 1 July deadline seems to be one carried in the media every summer though, whether it is an actual deadline remains to be seen.

It is suggested by Record, which has been translated by Sport Witness that Pinho will return to London in the coming days to try and move things on. It is stated that he has an office in the capital. Spurs need to sell Christian Eriksen in order to bring in Fernandes and United might need to know what is going on with Paul Pogba before they try to sign the player, however, he seemed to be a target before Pogba said that it might be time for a new challenge.

Fernandes has a clause in his contract which means that he will need to be paid €5 million for each offer over €35 million that has been rejected. Sport Witness points out that this could become a bargaining tool for interested clubs as each low offer could cost the club money, in terms with the clause in the player’s contract. One other thing is that the player had a great season in Portugal, it doesn’t mean the upcoming season is going to be the same. The time to sell him is now, whilst there is still interest in him.
