Quotes published in The Mirror today suggest yet more uncertainty at Old Trafford this summer, as fresh speculation surrounding Robin van Persie’s future has emerged.
Former Nottingham Forest and Holland striker Pierre van Hooijdonk has claimed van Persie’s future at Old Trafford can only be guaranteed if Louis van Gaal replaces David Moyes as manager.
In the last month or so there have been claims that members of the United hierarchy have met with van Gaal for preliminary talks should they wish to change the manager, something the club has denied. However Dutch sources claim van Gaal expects a vacancy to arise at Old Trafford this summer, and is reluctant to accept an offer to take over at Tottenham Hotspur in anticipation of the managerial change at the soon-to-be deposed Premier League Champions.
It is this very managerial appointment which van Hooijdonk believes holds the key for van Persie, he said:
“Let me tell you one thing: if Van Gaal becomes manager of Manchester United, Van Persie will stay. Louis will bring in a number of top players and he will create a whole new team for United –which, we can see, is necessary.”
While these comments come as no surprise, rumours surrounding Robin van Persie’s future have persisted throughout the season, this latest revelation makes the Dutchman out to be more of a prima donna than United fans would have ever thought. If true though it suggests there are serious problems with Moyes at the helm, and yet more player unrest at the club fuels the speculation that he is not the right man for the job.
Only time will tell whether or not this move is on the cards, and how the summer will play out for Manchester United. Yet in a transfer window where a suggested £200m is there to be spent on an overhaul of the squad, it is worrying to see yet more rumours surrounding the future of current United stars and the management. The club need to be looking forward, but right now that is easier said than done.
