Otamendi’s agent flying in to finalise the deal; the player does not want to go back to Valencia!

Nicolas Otamendi is back in news, while still on holiday! The latest reports suggest that, Otamendi’s agent, Eugenio López, will be travelling to Europe in order to get the deal finalized. It is believed that Lopez will travel to Porto where he will meet up with Jorge Mendes in order to wrap up the deal and then travel to Manchester for signing the player’s contract.  However, United might have to fight it out with Manchester city as they are believed to be in for the defender too. Another piece in this jigsaw puzzle is Ezequiel Garay. It is believed that Valencia sees Garay as Otamendi’s replacement which suggests that they have accepted the eventuality of Otamendi’s departure.

Earlier in the day, Marca, the Spanish sports journal, had reported that Otamendi does not want to return to Valencia and join the training which begins on 26th July. The Valencia center back is of a firm opinion that he does not want to be a part of any activities, for Valencia, this season and that includes the pre-season training too. Otamendi is scheduled to be back from his holidays in around a weeks time and would like to have the transfer issue sorted, latest, by then.

As the Argentinian had mentioned earlier, his club knows what he wants and that his agent has his complete backing. He, while speaking to ESPN, was quoted as saying:

“I spoke at the time with my agent, and Valencia know very well what I want. Every word my agent says is obviously with my authorisation, with whoever he needs to speak with.”

United, this summer, are looking to continue the rebuilding phase and would like to strengthen and re-balance the whole squad. One of the most important positions, for Louis van Gaal to fill is the center back. With so many youngsters at the back he would need an experienced center back in order to guide them. They had been linked with Mats Hummels for more than a year now, only for the defender to eventually extend his stay at Borussia Dortmund. Another of United’s target, Sergio Ramos, is currently involved in the power tussle between Real Madrid and United, rendering his availability at Old Trafford, an uncertainty. With David De Gea joining United touring side and Ramos getting the captain’s arm band following the exit of Iker Casillas, it seems this saga will go on a little longer. This puts Otamendi on the top of the list of the center backs that United would like to have at their disposal.

However, the transfer progress, it seems, is currently stuttering because of Valencia’s valuation of the player. The La Liga side is expecting the buying side to meet the release clause of the central defender, which is set at £35 million, while United are willing to cough up a maximum of £25 million. There were, hence, reports of United requesting the super agent Mendes to broker the deal.

As per Marca, United are the front-runners in the race for Otamendi and if the cost factor can be sorted quickly, United might as well have their fourth signing in two weeks. Lopez is hoping to get the business done by this weekend or the next week latest. This could mean, if United are swift enough to pull this through quickly, Otamendi might just be available for the matches against Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, scheduled on 25th and 29th July respectively. But with so many variables it is still difficult to tie this down as a certainty.
