Paul Pogba nominated for EA SPORTS Player of the Month for April 2018

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has been nominated for the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for April 2018. The Frenchman played all five matches for United during the month of April, in which United won four times, being defeated by Premier League relegation candidates West Bromwich Albion in the second game of the month. Pogba played a total of 408 minutes throughout April, scoring three goals and assisting two more.

United continued with improvement this season with a victory over Premier League champions Manchester City at the start of the month, trailing 2-0 at half-time but in the opening ten minutes of the second half, a wounded United, inspired by the Frenchman shone through and battled their noisy neighbours. Pogba scored a brace, his first in the 53rd minute, assisted by Ander Herrera, scoring against two minutes later (55′), assisted by Alexis Sanchez. United won the match 3-2 with Chris Smalling scoring the winner. Pogba was the Man of the Match.

In the second match of the month, with United in high spirits, it was going to be a match to forget – a 1-0 defeat to bottom of the Premier League West Bromwich Albion. Pogba played just 58 minutes in this match and was booked in the first half for a ‘hand of Pog’ handball in the box. Next up for United was a trip to Bournemouth, a 2-0 victory would see United strengthen their bid for second place in the league. Pogba got an assist for Romelu Lukaku in the 70th minute and was my Man of the Match.

United then took a break from Premier League action to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Dele Alli opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the match, seemingly breaking United’s hearts as he did a Fortnite celebration, which came too early. United equalised through Alexis Sanchez with a delightful assist by Pogba, which helped United on their way to victory. Herrera, assisted by Lukaku, won the game for United. The Frenchman was starting to become a player United could be proud of, again.

In the final match of April, a 2-1 victory over Arsenal, who were weakened after their UEFA Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid the previous Thursday evening, Pogba opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Sanchez’ effort was tipped toward the post, the Frenchman slotting in the rebound. Former United attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored an equaliser United’s defence would be embarrassed about. Substitute Marouane Fellaini, assisted by Ashley Young, scored an added-time winner to win the match 2-1.

It was a good month for Pogba, scoring three goals, assisting a further two, Man of the Match twice and a crucial player in the victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League, also the victory over Spurs in the FA Cup, which put United into the final, playing Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday 19th May 2018. Obviously, the award is based on the Premier League only, so the assist against Spurs will not be counted here.

Pogba has scored or assisted 57% of United’s goals and made 13 successful dribbles (fourth highest in the league) in the month of April (data courtesy of EA SPORT), showing him as a worthy candidate for the award. However, Pogba will be up against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Eriksen, Jake Livermore, Jordan Pickford, Raheem Sterling, and Wilfried Zaha.
