Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has spoken about the rumours surrounding Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech who could be heading to Old Trafford this summer as a replacement for David De Gea who could be heading to Real Madrid. The former United midfielder also believes that Čech is a similar goalkeeper to Edwin van der Sar who joined United when he was 35, back in 2005, becoming a solid addition to the Manchester United side, winning four Premier League titles, three FA Community Shields, two League Cups, one UEFA Champions League and one FIFA Club World Cup, in six seasons at Old Trafford. Speaking in his column in the Independent, which was published on Thursday, Scholes said:
“I remember the effect Edwin van der Sar had on the club when he arrived in 2005. United had struggled since Peter Schmeichel to find a really commanding goalkeeper.
“Edwin came ready-made. He was a Champions League winner, he had four years’ Premier League experience with Fulham, and in the end our manager got six extremely successful years out of him.
“Cech has only just turned 33. He could potentially play another six years for United.
“There would be no concern about having to give him time to play his way into the position or the demands that the Premier League makes of a goalkeeper new to the country.
“United won’t want to lose De Gea but there is a solution in the offing.”
David De Gea has been Manchester United’s best player all season and without him, I think the squad would have struggled getting back into fourth place, which was mainly due to his brilliant goalkeeping throughout the season, especially in the big matches, which made the difference. I believe that the Red Devils will do everything in their power to keep him this summer, hopefully that is what the club and manager Louis van Gaal will achieve.
The experienced Chelsea goalkeeper has recently fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Thibaut Courtois who has spent two seasons on loan with Atlético Madrid, making his debut season with the Stamford Bridge club, winning his first Premier League title. With Čech’s lack of matches this season, a move to Old Trafford, or elsewhere, could revive his career. United also have former Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés who was signed on a free in January, making his debut in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal last Sunday after replacing the injured De Gea.
I do hope David De Gea decides to stay with the Old Trafford club, which would be the best possible scenario for Manchester United, but in the back of my mind I remember that Real Madrid seldom fail to get their targeted players, so it could only be a matter of time before then end up taking the Spaniard from the Theatre of Dreams, but I am sure United will do what is needed to get ready for the new season, with or without the Spaniard.
