Paul Scholes wants Wayne Rooney to start against Manchester City and raises concerns over Radamel Falcao’s injury record

Paul Scholes feels Juan Mata should be dropped and Wayne Rooney should start for Manchester United against City this weekend. After Rooney’s ill advised kick on Stewart Downing leading to him getting a three game ban, Mata was drafted into the starting lineup for the month of October. Sadly, his performances have been underwhelming and he has been unable to claim his chance to cement a spot in the starting eleven.

With Rooney fit to start the game as confirmed by Van Gaal in his pre match press conference yesterday, Mata could be the one to make way for him and Scholes feel that just might be the right thing to do. Speaking in his column for The Independent in Ireland, Scholes said:

“As for United, my key change would be Wayne Rooney back in for Juan Mata.

“I cannot see Louis van Gaal doing any different. The Chelsea game just seemed to pass Mata by on Sunday and that is what will count against him. He seemed to be overpowered. Rooney has a great record against City and he just has to play.”

Scholes is also concerned by Radamel Falcao’s start to life at Old Trafford. Many people were skeptical about the arrival of Falcao considering his suspect injury record for the past year. Hence the loan signing was thought of as a good move enabling United to checkup on his recovery process before trying to sign him permanently in the next summer.

The Columbian striker was just about hitting top gear and had even scored his first goal for Manchester United in the win against Everton but was ruled out of the match against Chelsea after getting injured during training. Sadly for Van Gaal, he still hasn’t recovered from his injury to take his place in the squad and Scholes is hoping he can get a run in the team to help him return to full fitness.

“Lastly, from United’s point of view, they will be concerned with Radamel Falcao.

“He has not been able to get that run of games together to get match-fit and start scoring goals consistently. He scored against Everton, was taken off and did not start against West Bromwich Albion. Then he was injured for the Chelsea game.

“It has been a stop-start beginning to his career at United. He needs that run in the team to build his confidence, his performance levels and his fitness.”

Falcao’s goalscoring record is impeccable and his mere presence strikes fear into the opposition team. He has undoubtedly been one of the signings of the summer. But it seems that United might have to be a little patient as the rewards can be extraordinary if he can rediscover his best form.
