Portuguese midfielder praises Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho

Transfer rumours linking Manchester United to Valencia playmaker Andre Gomes are now bordering on a saga, but this time, it is the midfielder himself who fueled the rumours linking him to United. Gomes was quick to tell Marca that he is a big fan of compatriot Jose Mourinho, fuelling more rumours saying he’s on his way to United.

Gomes’ performances for Valencia appear to be attracting major interest from clubs around Europe, and he is set to feature for Portugal at the Euros in France this month. Gomes has also been linked with Juventus, but Jose Mourinho is reportedly more than willing to stump up his £31.5 million asking price. The fee seems steep, but Gomes is a key player for Valencia and has drawn comparisons with figures such as Zinedine Zidane in his time at Valencia.

Valencia reportedly sees Gomes, who has the same agent (Jorge Mendes) as Mourinho, as unsellable, because he is so integral to everything going on at Valencia. However, Gomes reportedly wants a move to United, and after Valencia’s poor season Gomes may look to force a move away. In the interview with Marca, Gomes was not reluctant to praise Mourinho, but also said that his main focus is on the Euros with Portugal.

“Mourinho is a great coach, there is no doubt about that, but for now my future is left to one side. I am not at all concerned with what will happen after the European Championship, I look forward to the tournament starting,”

Gomes is one of the most interesting young talents in La Liga, with incredible versatility and a wide range of technical attributes. Gomes can play in all three central midfield positions as well as on the left-wing, but his best position is in a creative role where his defensive responsibilities aren’t limiting his potential to venture forward and create goals. This season, he grabbed four goals for a ridiculously poor Valencia side and he also assisted seven, which is impressive, but he will probably need more to make it at a club under the pressure United is currently under.

Gomes is remarkably tall and his movement is great, and he adds to United’s dwindling side, physically speaking. United lost many key matches this season from aerial set-pieces, which shows a need for improvement next season, and Gomes could provide just that. Gomes is also comfortable in possession- an attribute that is rare in such a young midfielder. It is clear that Gomes has all the tools needed to be successful, but what he does with those tools remains to be seen.

Gomes could end up being an excellent deal for United, but he may not represent starting quality at Old Trafford just yet. He wouldn’t be a bad signing, but it would be an incredible risk, similar to the one United took with Anthony Martial and Memphis last year. Martial was a lucky success, but there are many questions still being asked about Memphis.

The transfer seems more and more likely with each passing day, and it will likely be dependent on Gomes’ performances for Portugal at the Euros. The better he is, the more plausible it is that we will see him at Old Trafford next season. If he is eager to play for United and Mourinho, he definitely could be successful, and he is the type of player who could be a massive player for United five years from now.
