Ratings: Manchester United 1-0 Middlesbrough – Barclays U21 Premier League 2015/16

Manchester United beat Middlesbrough in the Barclays U21 Premier League at Old Trafford on Monday evening, the same evening that Sunderland fell to a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in their final U21 match of the season. This puts United in the driving seat to retain the U21 Premier League crown this season with the Red Devils needing two points from their final three matches to win the league. A point next week against Spurs could be enough for the Old Trafford side. Paddy McNair scored the only goal of the match against a stubborn Middlesbrough side which saw the return ot Wayne Rooney from injury, who played 60 minutes, despite not really taking the game by storm.

Andreas Pereira replaced the injured Joe Rothwell after a challenge left him unable to continue with the Belgian-born Brazilian shining on his chance with two speculative efforts from range towards the end of the second half; one striking the crossbar, the other being found by the goalkeeper. Axel Tuanzebe also made his comeback from injury after being out of action since mid December, which was good to see him gain some fitness ahead of the final three matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Chelsea, which is a match yet to be arranged. Phil Jones made his second start for the U21’s after making his comeback from injury last week, playing the full 90 minutes without recurrence of his injury, which will boost United’s defence for the run-in this season. Sam Johnstone also made his second appearance in a week, thwarting a twelfth minute effort by Boro, which was one of a few chances for them throughout the match.

Here are the player ratings from the 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
