Ratings: Derby County 1-3 Manchester United – Emirates FA Cup 2015/16

Manchester United faced Derby County in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup at the iPro Stadium on Friday evening. It was going to be a big match for United, who need to turn their form around. United will be looking to earn a place in the fifth round draw on Sunday evening, but they would need to play their best football of 2016 in order to do that. It took United just 16 minutes to find a goal, through Wayne Rooney, assisted by Anthony Martial. Just over 20 minutes later, George Thorne found an equaliser, with United caught napping in their own half. This was the point where I thought that this could be another capitulation. At the end of the first half, it was game on – 1-1.

In the second half, United were attacking more, and looking quite good on the ball. It took twenty minutes for United to get back into the lead again, this time through Daley Blind, who got into the area from United’s box, passed the ball to Juan Mata, then the ball ended up with Jesse Lingard, for him to cross the ball into the box with Blind slotting the ball past Scott Carson. Michael Carrick made his return, replacing Morgan Schneiderlin in the 74th minute, which was good to see and means that United have more choice in midfield now, for the upcoming matches. Juan Mata scored United’s third seven minutes from time after being assisted by Martial, his second assist of the match. The Spaniard was then replaced by Ander Herrera, United’s second substitution of the match.

United have earned their place in the fifth round draw of the Emirates FA Cup, which will take place around 18:15 GMT on Sunday evening, live on BBC One.

Manchester United

1 David De Gea

Beaten by a George Thorne shot on the 37th minute of the match, something his defence should have nullified. Seldom had to do anything this evening, and anything he needed to save was nothing that could have challenged the Spaniard.

Guillermo Varela

Did well for his side this evening. Got forward on the overlap a few times, but his end product needs improvement, and he will improve. Could not get back in time to stop George Thorne from scoring.

12 Chris Smalling

Did well at the back, which seems to be a constant for the England defender. Put in some last-dutch challenges to stop his side from conceding again. Also did well in possession.

17 Daley Blind

Scored United's second goal, something he started himself, which was well deserved. Read the game will in central defence. Many suggest he offers nothing, but he offers more than people assume he does.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Looked comfortable on the ball and has earned his place in the side recently. Played a part in Wayne Rooney's opening goal.

27 Marouane Fellaini

I was not thrilled to see on in the starting XI once again, but he did well when United were attacking, and also when they were defending set pieces in the second half. The Belgian was first to clear the ball, nullifying the danger for United.

Caught out when George Thorne made his run into the box to score the equaliser before the end of the first half. Looked tired at times and may need a few matches to get back into the swing of things. Was replaced by Michael Carrick.

8 Juan Mata

Was more involved in his sides attacking play in the second half, passing the ball around, helping maintain possession on the attack. Scored United;s third of the evening, assisted by Anthony Martial, before being replaced by Ander Herrera.

14 Jesse Lingard

Got an assist in setting up Daley Blind for his goal which put United ahead for the second time in the match. Spent most of the match on the fringes. Looks like a promising player, but needs to do much more to remain in the starting XI permanently.

11 Anthony Martial

The Frenchman got the better of Christie for most of the match. He was dominant on the left flank and cutting into the box, and creating chances, and assisting both Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata. Just imaging him playing as a central striker and doing the same thing, but scoring himself. What a great buy he was in the summer.

Wayne Rooney

Scored another goal, his sixth in seven matches, which a venomous curling strike. Got about in his area well and always seemed to be a threat for his side, which was good to see. Hopefully this form can be taken into the next match, against Stoke City on Tuesday.

16 Michael Carrick

Replaced Morgan Schneiderlin. Did what Carrick does best, coltrolled the game from midfield, building the tempo and helping to maintain possession.

21 Ander Herrera

Replaced Juan Mata. Not enough time on the pitch to get involved, playing around seven minutes of football.
