Ratings: Job done, Mata and Mkhitaryan more than enough

Given the 3-0 lead, United fans thought that Jose Mourinho would pick a team that would involve youth players in the team, but Jose didn’t seem to let it go. With the surprising results that have been produced recently, the manager needs to be sure that everything would go as planned. As the absence of Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera (suspended) were confirmed by the manager, Zlatan Ibrahimovic started while fans were a bit unhappy as Timothy Fosu-Mensah wasn’t involved with him not even making the bench.

The game started with Saint – Etienne trying to get back in the competition as they had lost the first leg 3-0. Only after 15 minutes, United made it possible to get ahead and score after a beautiful game set up by Mata. As the game went by United were trying to score another and the chances were there but Pogba, Rashford, and Ibrahimovic were all denied by the keeper.

United were all over the place, maybe not in the best performance ever, still did their job and administrated the game well. Pogba once again was trying to impress and he did, as the French imposed the game being really helpful. No history at the end of the day, United qualify for the next round fighting on another front to play in the Champions League. Bailly will be the only absence for the next game due to that red card tonight, but hopefully, Jones and Rojo will be ready for the next round.

Getting back to this evening’s game, here’s how the player performed and ratings for each one of them:

Manchester United

20 Sergio Romero

Didn't have much to do in the first half as Saint - Etienne had only a couple of good chances not risking at all the post and the goalie was relatively quiet during the half. Good saves when asked, probably unlucky to be De Gea's substitute.

18 Ashley Young

Moving well to the right, a couple of good crosses and passes, his special quality moving forward. Maybe that may put in doubt his defensive abilities but in games like this, his quick game was surely needed. Great attitude by the Englishman and he is corresponding really well to the chances Jose is offering him. It was expected with the cup games coming up.

12 Chris Smalling

Good game from him today. The defence wasn't tested a lot in the first half with the French still trying to find themselves. The Englishman is reacting well and things are turning well for him. Needed to cover a lot more in the second half after Bailly was sent off.

3 Eric Bailly

There's no player who can guarantee the team like he does. Two or three chances from Etienne were immediately blocked by the player. Rock solid, no one can make it against him. Booked twice within a few minutes leaving United with 10 players. Questionable second yellow but with the advantage United had, the dive into the opponent was unnecessary. Overall had an amazing game.

17 Daley Blind

Felt really well during the game and it could be said that it was one of his best games this season. Never put in question defensively and moved on well forward. Gets along really well with Mkhitaryan and Rashford as the collaboration on the left side was amazing, producing a great game. Growing in confidence and the battle for the left back position is stronger than ever.

16 Michael Carrick

A really good game by Carrick once again, controlling and moving the ball well. There's a true general in front of that back four and never felt in trouble. Connected really well with Pogba and provided Paul to move forward easily without looking worried for what happens in the back, the Carrick magic.

6 Paul Pogba

Incredibly unlucky tonight, constantly tried to score without any success. the important thing is that the Frenchman is living up everyone's expectations and produce a great game. Collaboration with his teammates is clicking and the whole game can be built around him. He may be unhappy for missing those chances but in the end, job was done.

8 Juan Mata

United's bright spark and created a lot while on the pitch. It was Mkhitaryan touch that sent the ball into the back of the net but it was the Spaniard who created everything and got that goal scored. Good signs showed by him, the key to this squad without a doubt.

27 Marouane Fellaini

Did a good job keeping United ahead upfront and had a great chance to score but unlucky just like his teammates. Moved really well and overall it was a positive reaction from the Belgian. A standard set that could serve in the future.

22 Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Unlucky to leave the pitch early in the first half due to physical issues. The minutes he was on the pitch he was dangerous enough and created the right play down the middle, the best position for him is the one at no. 10. Hope that the injury isn't serious and he is back for the EFL Cup on Sunday.

10 Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Not the best game for him, but he did his job really well last Thursday and him being quiet today wasn't a problem at all. He was caught offside several times and it did annoy him but Zlatan kept trying. Probably saving the goals for Sunday.

19 Marcus Rashford

Came in for Mkhitaryan in the first half and since then was a constant threat for Saint-Etienne and could have benefitted more from Blind's cross. Had a good game overall and keeps sending messages to Jose responding really well to every chance he has given to him.

Ratings: Job done, Mata and Mkhitaryan more than enough

Good to see him having minutes in the football pitch returning in the European competitions. Never doubted, continued the job made by Carrick. Always an option for the midfield and this has pleased many United fans.

5 Marcos Rojo

Came on for Mata, as Jose was obliged to make that change with Bailly being sent off. Another good game, this time coming from the bench. The area was well covered and with Bailly out in the next round, we need him at the top.
