Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Munich. United created very little and at times struggled to match the German side on the pitch. It was a second half header from Javi Martinez which beat David De Gea that ended United’s pre-season with the second defeat of the summer.
United avoided a much bigger defeat, which will be a positive heading into the new Premier League season. Jose Mourinho knows the problems he has with those missing because of the FIFA World Cup and through injury. More could have been down this summer with United seemingly needed to strengthen in many areas, which could mean another long, tough season lying ahead.
There were some positives from the game though. Eric Bailly was partnered with Victor Lindelof and both did United proud, looking solid in defence. Fred was also looking to be settling at his new club, playing some good football at times and trying to inspire and create, which could be what he is tasked with when a full strength United play their matches.
Alexis Sanchez also looked like a different player from the one which arrived in January. He seems more confident, has had good pre-season, which will be his first for a number of years. The defeat means nothing, as it was pre-season. The playing style os problematic, but with the number of players missing, this is understandable. In a few weeks, this pre-season could be a thing of the past.
