Ratings: Manchester United 1-0 Everton – Barclays Premier League 2015/16

Manchester United beat Everton 1-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon with the only goal scored by in-form Frenchman Anthony Martial with Tim Fosu-Mensah coming in with the assist. United did well to overcome this Everton side, who have not been all that great at home, with United beating them 3-0 at Goodison Park back in October, but away from home, they have been a better side. Not today, though. United did well to press the visitors and keep top scorer Romelu Lukaku at bay. Martial struck in the 54th minute of the match after Marcus Rashford passed the ball for Fosu-Mensah before he assisted the Frenchman to score his thirteenth goal of the season and Manchester United’s 1,000th goal at Old Trafford in the Premier League, a feat not yet matched by any other club.

United have not had a great season, but the victory sees them rise to fifth in the league, ahead of West Ham United who dropped points on Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace. United are just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who could see themselves falling from grace if they drop more points and United leapfrog them. I wonder how incoming manager Pep Guardiola would feel about missing out on UEFA Champions League football next season, instead playing in the UEFA Europa League. That though leaves me hoping that Manchester United can do that, which would leave a very bitter taste in the mouths of the City supporters, who at the end of the day do not even rate the UEFA Champions League if you have a look at how empty their home ground is on European nights. Here are the player ratings from the 1-0 victory over Everton at the Theatre of Dreams on this celebratory day for Sir Bobby Charlton who saw the South Stand renamed after him.
