RATINGS: Manchester United 1-1 Bayern Munich

David De Gea: The Spaniard was not really called into action as much as was expected. He produced a great save to deny Arjen Robben in the second half. Calm and commanding in his area. 7

Phil Jones: The England defender was used as a right-back once again. He put in a decent performance, but did make a few mistakes at time. He recovered well and worked with his defensive team-mates to keep Bayern from causing more damage to United’s chances of making the semi-finals of the competition. 7

Rio Ferdinand: This was a performance from Rio’s back catalogue. He was calm, collected and just managed to intercept the odd threat. He was exposed at times though, but he made up for that with his performance throughout the match. 6

Nemanja Vidic: The Serbian was strong and reliable once again putting his all into the match. He made a great interception before scoring that header putting United into the match. I will be sorry to see him leave at the end of the season. 8

Alexander Büttner: Thrown in at the deep and but showed some ability. Was given the unenviable task to go against Arjen Robben. He was caught out by the winger at times. He panicked a little on the ball, but managed to make clearances and stop Bayern from taking advantage at the back. All four defenders and the goalkeeper worked as a team keeping Bayern at bay. Was replaced by Ashley Young. 7

Michael Carrick: Provided cover for the defenders and was calm and composed on the ball. Made a decent pass to Danny Welbeck, which was his best pass of the match. Carrick is starting to show his ability once again after a stop start season. 7

Marouane Fellaini: Looked out of place against Bayern Munich. He’s not a defensive midfielder. More of a threat going forward, which should be considered. 5

Antonio Valencia: Was not the best player on the pitch, but put in a shift. He was pushed back into defence when Büttner had to come off. Had a shot on goal, but it went over the bar. 7

Ryan Giggs: Put in a shift for the first half. Helped Büttner on the left, but didn’t really attack much. Experience was the key taking it into half time. 40-years-old and still putting in some decent performances. 6

Danny Welbeck: Scored early on, but referee called foul for a high foot. Missed a one-on-one chance though which was disappointing. Was the best player going forward and caused problems for Bayern at times. Work rate was very good. 7

Wayne Rooney: Created a decent chance for Welbeck and provided the assist for Vidic’s goal from the corner. The majority of the match he had dropped back to help the midfield and defence and should be applauded for the performance. Not a lot going forward, which was why Welbeck was needed on the pitch at the same time. 6

Shinji Kagawa: Replaced Ryan Giggs at the start of the second half. Put some energy into United’s attack. Gave more to the team than Giggs did in the first half and seemed to enjoy facing his old rival club once again. Needs to be involved more for the remainder of the season. 6

Ashley Young: Replaced Alexander Büttner with 16 minutes remaining. Helped keep the momentum for United, but that was all really. 5

Javier Hernandez: Replaced Danny Welbeck with five minutes remaining. Was fouled by Martínez, meaning the Bayern man will miss the next leg. Could have been brought on earlier. 6
