Ratings: Manchester United (1)0-0(3) Middlesbrough – Capital One Cup 2015/16

Manchester United were beaten 3-1 on penalties by Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. Louis van Gaal made may changes to his side with only Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo retaining their starting places from the 0-0 draw against Manchester City on Sunday. It was a game of few chances in either half, resulting in extra time to be played. The likes of Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira played well throughout the match, with Lingard looking to cement a first team place, giving himself a strong case for that to happen. United introduced Wayne Rooney to replace James Wilson at the start of the second half, with Ashley Young replacing Marcos Rojo just after the hour, with Anthony Martial replacing Memphis Depay with nineteen minutes of the first half left to play.

Extra time was not very good for United, who had chances, saw a few penalty cries ignored also, all before the penalty shoot out, which was not something that was going to be in United’s favour. Boro scored their first, with Wayne Rooney missing his effort. Boro then missed their second, allowing Andreas Pereira to level the score with his fine spot kick. Boro took the lead in their third, with Michael Carrick missing his penalty. Boro were ahead and scored their fourth. United needed to score to keep themselves in the competition, but Ashley Young missed his penalty. Manchester United join Chelsea and Arsenal, who were both knocked out on Tuesday evening.

Manchester United

20 Sergio Romero

Not a replacement for David De Gea. Was responsible for some poor goalkeeping, especially a backpass which nearly ended up in his own net. Made some crucial saves late in the match, but poor on penalties.

36 Matteo Darmian

Was a positive outlet going forward and combined well with Jesse Lingard. May have done better putting in some more crosses for his team-mates though.

12 Chris Smalling

Another solid performance, but he was careless at times with his passing, putting United under great pressure each time.

17 Daley Blind

United's weak point this evening. Made a few mistakes, especially the backpass which Romero let drift past him, and past the post, thankfully. Kike got the better of him.

5 Marcos Rojo

Did not really have much to do, but did not get forward much either, like he did aganist City. Fatigue could be the cause of that as the Argentinian was replaced by Ashley Young just after the hour.

16 Michael Carrick

Calm and composed on possession, made a few crucial passes. Also got the better of Kike with a last-ditch tackle. Useless at penalties.

27 Marouane Fellaini

Was involved in much of the match and trying to get himself on the scoresheet, but was not good enough to do so. Service to his was not great, he did make a nuisance of himself in the box though.

14 Jesse Lingard

Was United's livliest player in attack before Anthony Martial came on. Linked well with Matteo Darmian and got about freely on either flank. Seems to have taken his chance well and needs to remain in the side.

Andreas Pereira

Put in a decent performance. Has the technical ability to succeed. Should have really took the game by the scruff of the neck as he could have been the star. Was the only United player to score in the shootout.

Some will ask if this was the same player that shined in Holland. Needs time to adapt and will probably come good, but at the moment would make more impact from the bench. His set-pieces were not the best, his decision-making was better.

James Wilson

Not as effective as he could have been, mainly down to lack of service. Hauled off at half-time and replaced by Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney

Replaced James Wilson. Could have made the difference almost instantly, but soon began to become that shadow of a player. Did not really contribute much and took a poor penalty in the shootout. Needs to be dropped. Cannot be happy with his own performances. Captain? Don't start me on that one!

18 Ashley Young

Replaced Marcos Rojo. Was a major outlet on the left and caused problems with his deliveries. Saw his penalty saved, which was crucial for United.

11 Anthony Martial

Replaced Memphis Depay. United's best player aside of Jesse Lingard. Ran at Boro's defence, linked well with Ashley Young. Sadlt his team-mates were rarely on his wavelength, which is a problem for the manager and the philosophy to solve. Playing him on the wing is like having a Maserati and not being able to drive.
