Ratings: Nemanja Matic shone as Jesse Lingard failed to impress

Manchester United lost the UEFA Super Cup final as Casemiro and Isco score for Real Madrid while Romelu Lukaku gave hope to United fans after scoring. Everything was set to for a great game but Real Madrid started to dominate the game from the beginning, as our midfield wasn’t clicking.

A tactical change from Zinedine Zidane with Isco and Gareth Bale switching places was crucial as United defenders weren’t getting used to it. This made possible for Real Madrid to score in their best moments, yet it was an offside goal. History repeats itself and referees are afraid to give a decision against Real Madrid. Much to Real Madrid’s favouritism, something wasn’t working at United as Jesse Lingard and Matteo Darmian were both terrible. Marcus Rashford tried to change something but it was useless, we are far away from being ready for Champions League and this game said it all.

An awkward decision from Mourinho leaving Martial on the bench probably cost us the game. Leaving all behind here are the player ratings for tonight’s game:

Manchester United

1 David De Gea

Made some really good saves in the first half as Real Madrid kept pressing from both sides. He clearly didn't see that coming from Casemiro, offside or not that was a distraction from the defence. He couldn't do much in the second goal, however, did incredible saves in the second half as well. Where would we be without him?

12345

25 Antonio Valencia

The Ecuadorian has been neutralised and this is a problem big time. If he doesn't go forward, nobody does. The moment he started moving everything changed. Definitely should keep up in the second half and he did it. Amazing.

12345

2 Victor Lindelof

I was afraid to admit, but Lindelof is having a hard time adapting and this is just not okay. In fault at the first goal and fell for Ronaldo's tricks. Victor needs a lot more work to do.

12345

12 Chris Smalling

Absolutely terrible. There are no words that can describe how bad he was in the first half. Caused the referee to have second thoughts whether Casemiro was offside or not. Completely, he doesn't serve for anything.

12345

36 Matteo Darmian

Started well, but then was completely lost. Didn't help forward, useless at the back. Shows how much we need a left back right now as it is easily the problem we are facing right now. Terrible.

12345

21 Ander Herrera

Felt like it wasn't the usual Herrera and this was the problem. He needed to go yet his replacement didn't give much energy. Maybe should have stayed more.

12345

31 Nemanja Matic

He is our best signing and was our best player on the pitch as well. Amazing crosses and what a build up play. That's the part we needed the link and when having chances he nailed it.

12345

6 Paul Pogba

Had explosions but still needs to be more mature. Good moments during the game and that miss that could have changed everything is stuck in my memory.

12345

22 Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Mkhitaryan just cannot help it but lose it every time something goes wrong in a chance. His defensive skills are far from good and we didn't see the usual him. He has to change, AGAIN!

12345

9 Romelu Lukaku

Nothing can make me forget that chance he missed and the issues he had in the first half. Changed a lot in the second and it was obvious when he found the net, could have done more.

12345

14 Jesse Lingard

Question marks were immediately raised after Lingard started ahead of Martial and it was right. Absolutely nothing, terrible at this game. Unbelievable!

12345

Substitutes

19 Marcus Rashford

He tried and he had the best chance to send the game in extra time. Marcus was far from his best and he cannot do it all, from corners to free kicks. Give it rest and focus in pace and play with your head.

12345

27 Marouane Fellaini

It is a controversial feeling. He did well in few aspects, he should have been more careful in other crucial moments. Jose Mourinho keeps trusting him, but I don't.
