Ratings: Rojo to the rescue; Job done in Russia for United

Manchester United visited Russia’s Rostov this evening and only managed to get away with a draw. Jose played once again mind games with everyone, as we all were trying to figure out the style of play United were playing. Was it a regular system as always or did Jose Mourinho go full Louis van Gaal mode?

In this messy situation Jose ha it all settled, our natural back three would circulate the ball and play long as the pitch was indeed tricky. Fans and the players as well feared for any possible injuries as the ball kept bouncing in the first minutes leaving things unclear for the United players.

However, it was all about United in the first half as United kept pushing keeping them busy, while the security needed being back with Rostov not causing much trouble. As we were getting close to the first half, Fellaini, Ibrahimovic and in the end Mkhitaryan combined well to give United a deserved lead. Jose’s mastermind plan worked really well. All had to be closed in Russia.

What he didn’t think was the moment of sleep of Jones and Smalling that let down Romero as he couldn’t do anything to avoid the goal. Rostov played better in the second half as United needed Rojo to the rescue several times and the Argentine was once again solid doing really well.

In the end, it was job done and a satisfying result as the Russians will visit Old Trafford next week and with Zlatan rested, United have a surprise for them. Leaving all this behind, here are the player ratings for tonight’s game:

Manchester United

20 Sergio Romero

The Argentine didn't have much work to do in the first half. It must be noted that he transmitted his calmness around his teammates who were caught in surprise considering the pitch conditions. Always does a great job, when given opportunity, the defence let him down at the goal.

18 Ashley Young

Decent performance but that's all we can say for him. He job was to keep the opposition on their side but had to return often and defend. Not the best one for him, but we can take it.

4 Phil Jones

After a shaky game in the weekend, possibly his worst this season, the English did better tonight. Ball clearance with his head and has helped Smalling as well. He should have done better in the Rostov goal, he went to sleep.

12 Chris Smalling

The only mistake he did tonight was converted into the goal for Rostov. He was caught off position but other than that he did well. A few clearances, a bit dangerous, but did okay overall.

5 Marcos Rojo

He was all over the pitch tonight. From left to right, Rojo has been to the rescue. He did really well and has been helpful up front moving wide. In the end of the night, we can say Rojo to the rescue again.

17 Daley Blind

The Dutch international has handled the pressure well in a pitch where you cannot predict the ball bouncing. He defended well leaving the opposition no chance. Pushed well, it was lovely game for the birthday boy.

27 Marouane Fellaini

One of the best games in a United shirt. I am not a big fan of the Belgian, but tonight his presence showed dominance perfectly well. Handled really well and followed well Jose's instruction. He should keep it up.

21 Ander Herrera

Let's start with that silly yellow card for that late challenge, but of course apart from that he is the Ander of always. Imposes the game and should have done better on a first occasion that could have seen United ahead early. Always instructing his teammates. Well done Ander.

6 Paul Pogba

He really needed to settle for winning the ball in this tricky pitch. Still, has issues that are psychological not leaving him alone. The French should work on his shots as well, and ball circulation of course.

22 Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Our midfield scored an important goal tonight and was taking them down one to one, playing physical responding well to the physical nature of the game. Great combination between him, Fellaini and Zlatan. We really missed him very much, without a doubt he should play against Chelsea, as a no.10 of course.

9 Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It was a quiet first half for the big Swede as he wasn't much active, however, played an important role in the goal Henrikh scored. Seemed nervous at times, hasn't forgotten what happened last weekend. One week off will do well for him.

11 Anthony Martial

Came on for Mkhitaryan. Not sure where he stands right now, but it wasn't his night for sure. Pressed, but not good enough, though.

25 Antonio Valencia

Came on for Daley Blind. Didn't have any impact in the game.

16 Michael Carrick

Came on for Ander Herrera. Didn't provide much as he came on really late. Jose giving us a hint that he may play on Monday against Chelsea.
