REPORT: Bray Wanderers 1-0 Manchester United XI

Manchester United U21’s played their first match in their pre-season campaign against Bray Wanderers in Ireland on Sunday afternoon. Warren Joyce’s side were defeated 1-0. The U21 coach took a large squad over to Ireland, making sure that each played had some time on the pitch either half of the match. Only Tom Thorpe remained on the pitch for the second half, putting 90 minutes under his belt in the first pre-season fixture. Bray Wanderers scored their first goal on the 42nd minute through Jake Kelly.

Philly Hughes missed an early header for the home side before the young United side made an impression in the match with Bebe’s shot being blocked. Josh Harrop tested Stephen McGuinness a few times, to no avail. It was Kelly’s goal the decided the match after a pass from Ismahil Akintade, who got the better of Callum Evans on occasion, with Kelly beating United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira. United could have equalised moments after Bray took the lead, but it was not meant to be.

At the start of the second half, Warren Joyce made 10 changes with Kieran O’Hara, Guillermo Varela, Paddy McNair, Saidy Janko, Joe Rothwell, Davide Petrucci, Andreas Pereira, Tom Lawrence, Angelo Henriquez and James Wilson all being introduced to gain some match fitness and try and find an equaliser, and more importantly a winning goal in the match. The closest United came to scoring was Tom Lawrence’s fine shot which made Shane Redmond perform a fine save to keep his side ahead.
