REPORT: Southport 0-0 Manchester United XI

Manchester United U21’s played their second pre-season match on Tuesday evening against Southport at the MerseyRail Community Stadium, where they were held to a goalless draw. Warren Joyce used the majority of his squad once again with his side still trying to find a goal in two matches. The U21’s were defeated 1-0 by Bray Wanderers on Sunday afternoon in Ireland. Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez was closest to scoring in the match, which will be good for the players as they find full fitness ahead of the new season.

There were 675 supporters inside the MerseyRail Community Stadium, but by no means was a dull affair as the scoreline would make you seem. Joyce started James Wilson on the attack against the Conference Premier side, but he it was not his night. He was replaced at the start of the second half by Chilean striker Henriquez, as were the majority of the side, who face Altrincham at Moss Lane on Wednesday evening. Davide Petrucci and Tom Thorpe as well as Wilson had efforts on goal inside the first half, to no avail.

At the start of the second half, Joyce made nine changes to rejuvenate his side who were still looking for a goal. It was good to see so many players getting some time on the pitch in the match, but hopefully as the pre-season continues, goals will be scored. There was one booking in the match for Luke George of Southport, but there could have been many more as the midfield area was akin to a combat zone at times. Henriquez could have scored the winner with 10 minutes remaining, but Dean Porter thwarted the Chileans effort on goal, which was a shame.

United face Altrincham at Moss Lane on Wednesday evening, KO 19:45 BST, before playing their last scheduled fixture against Barnsley at Oakwell on Tuesday 29th July, KO 19:00 BST.
