International Reds: Marcos Rojo puts in a great performance for Argentina

Three Manchester United players featured for their countries in friendly matches played on Saturday. Both Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo started for Argentina in their 1-0 victory over Honduras ahead of the Copa America this summer. Marouane Fellaini represented Belgium in their friendly against Switzerland winning 2-1.

Argentina 1-0 Honduras – Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, San Juan

Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo started for Argentina in their friendly victory over Honduras in the run up to the Copa America, which starts next weekend. Romero played the full 90 minutes of the match, with Rojo playing just 78 minutes of the victory. Argentina started the match as the better team, nearly getting the better of Honduras in the first few minutes of the match. Rojo, with some neat interplay with former United winger Angel Di Maria nearly helped his country find the opening goal. On the 15th minute, Rojo collided with Acosta and needed treatment before continuing play. Honduras put in some speculative efforts from long-range, which did not test Romero in the slightest. Rojo in the 19th minute put a good ball into the box with Figueroa putting the ball onto the roof of the net, giving Argentina a corner. In the 31st minute, United target Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal of the match, with Marcos Rojo getting the assist, finding Higuain in the box with the Napoli striker nutmegging the defender to end his international goal drought. Argentina, who are unbeaten in their last five matches, were too much for Honduras to break down. Rojo’s evening ended on the 78th minute of the match after being replaced by Victor Cuesta. Honduras had six shots on goal, one of those on target but not pressuring Romero at all. Poor game from the visitors, but with this Argentina side looking to end their failure to win the FIFA World Cup in 2014, also losing to Chile in the final of the Copa America last summer, 0-0 AET and 4-1 on penalties. This summer might see a more resurgent Argentina romp to victory.

Switzerland 0-0 Belgium – Stade de Genève, Geneva

Marouane Fellaini started in Belgium’s friendly match against Switzerland ahead of this summer’s European Championships in France. The Manchester United midfielder played 85 minutes of the match, which Belgium won 2-1 with goals by Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne. Fellaini will make the Euro’s this summer, which may give him a chance to find suitors for him this summer in his bid to find more playing time next season. Fellaini may not be a fans favourite, but he brings something to United which may be missed if not replaced. Physicality and aggression, something missing since Roy Keane left the club over a decade ago. Belgium have two more matches before the European Championships start within the next fortnight; Finland on Wednesday and Norway a week tomorrow.
