AS Roma want Kevin Strootman to sign new deal at the club to end the constant transfer speculation of the Netherlands international leaving the club amid speculation that he will link up with Dutch manager Louis van Gaal at Manchester United. Strootman has been linked with many clubs around Europe and back in the summer of 2013, it was thought by many credible journalists that he was destined to link yup with then United manager David Moyes, but a move to AS Roma came out of the blue.
Strootman has been out of action since the end of last season with serious cruciate ligament injury which kept him out of the World Cup in Brazil during the summer, with the Netherlands reaching the semi-finals, losing to Argentina and beating the host nation, Brazil in the third place play-off under Louis van Gaal, who left his post after that match. Strootman was a key figure for the Netherlands in the run-up to the World Cup, something which made Van Gaal change his sides formation completely because of the injury to the player. The fact that Strootman missed the World Cup was a big blow, for the manager and his team-mates.
Strootman played 25 matches for Roma, scoring five goals before the injury ended his season and ruled him out of the World Cup. During those matches, the Netherlands international created 47 chances and had an 88% pass success rate, which is why many teams have been after him for some time. Personally I feel he was the midfielder that United missed out on, and they may do once again. Being the box-to-box midfielder that was needed this summer, and last, Strootman would have secured United’s midfield, but the arrival of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind have done wonders themselves.
Strootman is a player that has constantly been linked to Manchester United since the summer of 2012. He was linked during the summer with Louis van Gaal having a big war chest to strengthen his side, but the injury to the player’s knee ruled out anything, but there was plenty of posturing, mostly coming from Italy with Roma manager Rudi Garcia suggesting that journalists must seal to the club’s president, reported by the Daily Mail recently. Garcia was quoted as saying:
“Strootman for sale? You must speak about this with our president.
“But the intention of the club is very clear: Strootman is an important talent for us.
“I want to have him available for the home match against City (on December 10), which will be crucial.
“He is a midfielder of the highest level and we’re waiting for him to return. We hope to have him back soon.”
Roma’s general manager Mauro Baldissoni has also cast doubt over Strootman being allowed to leave the club with the Daily Mail reporting his as saying:
“We can’t wait until Kevin is back on the pitch.
“We miss him a lot, but he is getting closer to his return. We are proud that Kevin is part of our squad and he is not for sale.”
The same newspaper also suggested that Louis van Gaal was ‘extremely interested’ in signing the talented midfielder and that Spanish attacking midfielder Juan Mata could the player to head to Italy in exchange for the Netherlands international. It seems to me that these rumours casting doubt on Mata’s future at the Old Trafford club are just made up with no real source on the matter. It would be very strange for Manchester United to spend £37.1 million signing the Spaniard from Chelsea in January, only to get rid of the player within the year. Mata has been one of the better players for the club since he signed during the winter transfer window, yet sections of United’s supporters would be tempted to get rid of such a player to sign Strootman or even Arturo Vidal, which is the rumour he is linked to this week. Who will it be next week?
