Romelu Lukaku brings more than goals says Ander Herrera

During Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Stoke on Saturday, Romelu Lukaku netted his 150th goal of his club career, which is a majestic feat, considering the Belgian is just 24 years of age. His goal in the 2-2 draw at the weekend made it five goals in five games for the striker, which is a brilliant start to his Manchester United career, following his move from Everton where his goalscoring record was also impressive. Lukaku’s hot start to his United career demonstrates the Belgian’s hunger to succeed, and that is one area in which teammate Andre Herrera is impressed. The official Manchester United website reported what the Spaniard had to say:

“Last season we won three titles because we had one of the top scorers like Zlatan. If you want to be a champion and win titles you need a guy like him and Romelu is doing fantastic for us.

“He is so hungry, he wants to win things, he wants to score goals and he wants to be important.”

Herrera also doesn’t believe that Lukaku’s lack of Champions League experience will hold him back:

“It doesn’t matter that he hasn’t played Champions League before, he has scored goals and played in the best league in the world so he will score goals for us.”

Personally, I believe Lukaku will perform in Europe as he has in the league. It will be a good test for him to play against experienced central defenders. However, I do think there was an over-reliance on Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season, to an extent, so it’s important that United don’t majorly rely on the Belgian to provide all the goals. Andre Herrera shares the same opinion as me and believes goals will have to come from other areas if United are to challenge for silverware this season:

“Paul Pogba is there to score goals. Marcus [Rashford] will score, Anthony [Martial] is scoring, Juan [Mata] will score because it is in his DNA so we cannot give all the responsibility to Romelu. It is very important to have him though.”

After Ibrahimovic got injured last season, fans and journalists alike started to wonder; “where United’s goals would come from?” and United can’t have that same reliance on Lukaku. Put it this way, did United ever ‘rely’ on other great United strikers such as Ruud van Nistelrooy? In my opinion, they didn’t, his job was to score and he did that brilliantly. Although, other players such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo would all contribute with goals.

United need to do the same this season. The likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford have all scored a few goals between them so far this season, and as Herrera mentions, Juan Mata always seems to pop up with goals, so if the players previously mentioned can contribute, then United will score plenty. On top of that, Romelu Lukaku has a terrific goal scoring record and with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba assisting him, he should have no problem finding the net.

United return to action this week with a Champions League tie against FC Basel – the first of the season, and no doubt Lukaku will want a goal to find his feet in the competition. Marcus Rashford will also want to continue his trend of scoring debut goals – as you may well know the youngster has scored on his Manchester United first team debut, England senior and U21 debuts, Europa League debut, Premier League debut, and League Cup debut. So far the Champions League debut goal is the one of the few that eludes him.
