Romelu Lukaku coming back to form for Manchester United?

There was a lot of hype surrounding Romelu Lukaku when he made his mega-money move to Manchester United last summer, and for the first couple of months of the season, he really started to repay the heavy price tag, a fee that could end up rising to £90 million.

The Belgian arrived at Old Trafford an already prolific Premier League goalscorer having scored 85 goals in spells at Everton and West Brom, and all of that before he was 24. So as you can expect when the season started, fans and pundits alike thought Lukaku would hit the ground running, and with creativity in behind him thought he would really push United towards success this season.

He didn’t hang around in proving people right, scoring on his competitive debut against Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup, and then scoring twice on his Premier League and home debut for United in a 4-0 win against West Ham five days later.

The goals continued for Lukaku in the early stages of his United career, a two-goal haul against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League took the Belgian’s tally to 10 goals in his first nine appearances, beating the record set by the great Sir Bobby Charlton who scored nine goals in his first nine appearances for the reds.

However, things haven’t been all plain sailing for Lukaku. Since the blistering start to his United career, the goals have somewhat dried up for the 24-year-old. After scoring 17 goals in his first 13 games this season, for both club and country, Lukaku only managed to score once in the 12 games that followed, something that Mourinho put down to fatigue.

He told BBC Sport; “The boy is tired. He is physically a monster but not a machine and he is feeling it.” With the lack of options for United up front, the striker has been forced to play in games across all competitions and it clearly caught up with him.

Since the turn of the year, however, both his goals and performances have picked up, and with the recent arrival of Alexis Sanchez, his game is only going to improve from now until the end of the season. The arrival of Sanchez to Old Trafford has clearly lifted not only Lukaku but the whole club.

All-time leading scorer at United Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports; “I think that’s what Manchester United have lacked, players around Lukaku who are going to push Lukaku on as well and try to help him get a bit more freedom to score goals.” Sanchez will run the channels and do the work that Lukaku has been doing all by himself to this point. He can start to play like a proper centre-forward and concentrate on getting in the six-yard box to grab his goals.

Not only will Sanchez’s game be beneficial to Lukaku but his all-around professionalism and work ethic will be infectious to not only the Belgian but to all of his teammates. The way in which Sanchez gets around the pitch and never stops will hopefully see Lukaku and the rest of the front line follow suit so United can defend from the front a bit better and win the ball back quicker.

It seems as if Romelu Lukaku is starting to really come back into form for United, and he is beginning to realise how hard he has to work if he is to make a success of himself at Old Trafford. Goals are not everything that the manager will look for in the centre-forward, he will want him to work incredibly hard for the team and defend from the front. Alexis Sanchez is a player that will set the tone for Lukaku in that respect, but it’s up to the Belgian to follow suit.
