Romelu Lukaku speaks on scoring goals and Jose Mourinho’s pre-season expectations

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United goal-scoring account in a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake – the club’s second win of their pre-season tour. After handling a pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, shaking a defender to send him careening into his own keeper, he slotted the ball coolly into the back of the net off his left foot. The goal proved to be the difference maker as United would go on to seal the win after going down to 10 men.

Following the match, the Belgian sat with MUTV to speak about the team’s performance and adjusting to life as a Red Devil. During the interview, you can clearly see a new spark in the man, a desire to succeed and a knowing that he now has the tools to achieve it at the highest levels.

While one can never expect immediate success, he does seem to have a productive sense of urgency about him to mesh within the ranks with as little transition as possible. Not rushing it, you can just tell he’s anxious to prove his mettle.

“I’m here to score goals and be the focal point of the team. At Manchester United, we play to win and that’s the mentality when I get on the pitch.

“I didn’t take a lot of time to settle in, I just want to be one of characters in the team to help the team win.”

In regards to a surprisingly vibrant Real Salt Lake side, who recently notched their own 6-2 win over the LA Galaxy in league play only two weeks ago, he had this to say:

“Real Salt Lake caused a bit of a shock – but we knew they were a good side and we were well prepared. Every time we played at high pace, we did well. We need to keep improving because now we are playing against better opponents and we need to improve.”

Better opponents are most definitely on the horizon, with Manchester United set to face hometown rivals Manchester City, as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona over the course of the next week. These will naturally be truer tests to United’s preseason progress thus far, and each team will surely be looking to come away with victories to keep momentum at a high before moving into their respective seasons.

“From the first day, when we had the meeting with the manager in Los Angeles, you just felt that something special was happening. But it’s down to us now; we need to work hard every day and deliver in the preseason games to be ready for the new season.

“Of course, this is what the manager wants. He wants us to be prepared and play attractive football and be organised as well.”

Only time will tell the extent to which Romelu Lukaku adds to his goalscoring record in a Manchester United shirt. The Red Devils take on Manchester City this Thursday, 20 July at 21:00 Local Time/3:00 BST (Friday morning) at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas in United’s first match of this year’s International Champions Cup. This will also be the first ever time the Manchester sides will meet outside of the UK.
