Romelu Lukaku will play through the pain barrier to help Manchester United win the Emirates FA Cup

Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku will be fit to face former club Chelsea to contest the Emirates FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday. It has been suggested by The Mirror that the Belgian, who has been in his native country recovering for the past fortnight, will play through the pain barrier to help his side win the domestic trophy this season. Lukaku arrived back at United’s Aon Training Complex in the last two days and has been going through intensive treatment in order for him to recover for Saturday’s prestigious match at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho believes the forward will only be able to take a place on the bench against Chelsea but this could be mind games ahead of the third and final clash with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, with the pair partaking in a war of words at times this season, which is something the media will probably fire up ahead of the clash which will kick off at 17:15 BST on Saturday.

United legend Andy Cole, feels that Lukaku can feature in the match as he has already proved that he has the character to break through at United, especially after he battled through illness to play in the Manchester derby, where United, after being 2-0 down at half-time, won 3-2 with Paul Pogba’s brace and Chris Smalling’s winner. Cole, speaking to the official Manchester United website, said:

“I’ve watched him all season, like everybody else. I think he looks fantastic. To get the goals he’s got this season, in a team that doesn’t create loads of chances for him, he’s done brilliantly and really well considering it’s his first season at Old Trafford.

“It’s not nice when you’ve got that little bit of rhythm and pick up an injury. You know you’ve got a massive game coming up and are a bit touch and go or whatever. So it may be difficult for him but, hopefully, he’ll be passed fit and do the best he can.

“It’s not every year you’re going to get to the FA Cup final. There are no doubts that, if he’s even 90, 80 or 70 percent fit, he’ll give it a go.”

Lukaku made the move from Everton in the summer for a £75 million fee, which could rise to £90 million. He has been criticised, at times, for his poor first touch and the fact he has not been able to score more goals, but after becoming that player who battles and makes a difference in the side, the criticism has turned into praise for the Belgian, who will be seeking to help Belgium have a good FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer.

Cole himself was criticised for not scoring too many goals at the start of his Manchester United career but if you have a look how that changed, the fact Lukaku is only just 25 suggests he has all the time in the world to complete his development into one of the top strikers in the Premier League and in Europe. Lukaku would score more goals if United had a team able to create chances for him. Most of the time, the Belgian is playing deep and trying to get more involved for other teams. If this can be sorted in the summer, United would be a much better team next season.

I have no doubts about Lukaku at United. He has kicked on from last season, so far scoring one goal more than he did at Everton. It may not be the best, but it shows how consistent the player is and how much he wants to achieve. Last season, United won the FA Community Shield, the EFL Cup, and the UEFA Europa League. This season, a finish like that is out of the window, but Lukaku will be wanting to lift the FA Cup, beating his former club Chelsea. If he does that, it will be a much better season than his last at Everton.
