Scott McTominay signs new Manchester United contract

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has today signed a new contract with the Old Trafford club. The 20-year-old will remain a Red Devils until the summer of 2021, with an option of a further year to be added, which could keep him at the club until 2022. McTominay came through the clubs Academy, going through a growth spurt over the last few years which has seen him tower over the six-foot height, helping him earn a place on Jose Mourinho’s squad this season.

McTominay was born in Lancaster and made his first team debut away to Arsenal last season, also travelling on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States of America, Norway and the Republic of Ireland. The player scored his first goal whilst on the pre-season tour, also making his debut in the UEFA Champions League away to Benfica on Wednesday, which saw fellow Academy graduate Marcus Rashford score a stunning goal to give United their third win in three group stage matches.

McTominay, speaking to the official Manchester United website about his new contract, said:

“I have grown up at this great club and it has always been a big part of my life. I attended the club’s development centre in Preston from the age of five and have gone on to progress from there.

“To make my debut at the end of last season was a dream come true, and I would like to thank the manager for the faith that he has shown in me. I was absolutely delighted when the manager promoted me to the first-team squad and I am looking forward to continuing my journey with this fantastic team.”

Mourinho, McTominay’s manager, also spoke about the player and the delight on him signing a new contract, saying:

“I am delighted Scott has signed a new contract, he is one of our young players that has gone from strength to strength. He made his Premier League debut at the end of last season and made his Champions League debut this season. I had no hesitation in promoting Scott to the first-team squad last month as we have total belief in him.”

United travel to Huddersfield Town on Saturday in the Premier League, which could see McTominay as part of the travelling squad with the injuries to Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini in midfield, not to mention Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in other areas of the squad. McTominay has some excitement about him, able to play in a variety of positions which could help Mourinho’s side continue their unbeaten run this season so far.
