Scott McTominay tipped to be future Manchester United captain

The famous American football coach and two-time Super Bowl champion Bill Parcells once said; “make one exception and next thing you know you have a team full of exceptions.” Considering Parcells ran his team with a militaryesque attention to details, it should come as no surprise that Parcells team building strategy involved a strict adherence to rules. Height, weight, speed and strength benchmarks all had to be met in order for the coach, affectionally known as “Big Tuna,” to even consider signing a player.

Similarly, if you look the current Manchester United squad, you will see a lot more of the “rule” then you will the “exception.” Romelu Lukaku is the prototypical number nine and the combination of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic tower over midfields throughout the world. However, if you look throughout the club’s history you will see figures like Paul Scholes, who was too small, Ji-Sung Park, who was too thin, and Juan Mata, who resembled an Ewok more than a footballer. These stories are reminders that exceptions, while not to be relied upon, should not be outright dismissed. Especially now that United may have a new youngster within their ranks who could be set to add his name to the list of United players who broke the mould.

The Daily Mail’s weekly series by their “Secret Scout” has highlighted United’s academy product Scott McTominay as a “future United captain” and believes that the midfielder could have a long and successful career at the club.

Having made his Premier League debut in May against Arsenal, McTominay surprised many United fans with his impressive display during their preseason tour. Since then, Jose Mourinho has highlighted him, along with youngsters Demitri Mitchell and Andreas Pereira as having bright futures at the club.

For many United supporters, Pereira has long been a promising prospect who just needed to be given a chance. However, against the wishes of manager Jose Mourinho, Pereira decided to go on a season-long loan to Valencia at the end of the transfer window. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, Pereira’s United chance was there to be taken when Pogba went down with an injury against Basel in the Champions League.

With Pereira out of the picture, McTominay is the natural next choice in line. United have good depth in midfield, both Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick are fantastic options, but United also have a lot of fixtures coming up. There is no reason that McTominay shouldn’t see a good amount of game time in the coming weeks.

The Daily Mail’s “Secret Scout” is quick to point out that McTominay’s greatest weakness is his lack of pace. While this may seem like a necessity for a midfielder, Carrick has been proving this myth false for almost two decades. Like the United captain, McTominay is big and strong in midfield, almost deceptively so. What he lacks in pace, he makes up for with intelligent positioning and quick reading of the game.

I don’t know who the “Secret Scout” is, I am assuming because it is a secret, but whoever they may be, they are certainly making many United fans excited about the future of McTominay. While he has only made a few appearances for the First Team, early returns are promising. It may just be a few years from now that he proves to be another United great. No matter what the rules may be.
