Serie A clubs interested in Manchester United defender this winter

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian is a target for a host of Serie A clubs this winter. The Italian has seemingly lost his place in Jose Mourinho’s side after falling down the pecking order at the club. Darmian was signed by Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2015 and started his career at the club being compared to Gary Neville but soon lost that momentum. The 28-year-old saw Antonio Valencia resume the right-back role with Darmian left to fill in at left-back with Luke Shaw unable to tie down the position at the time.

This season, Darmian has played eleven times for United, eight starts and three appearances from the bench. The player has predominantly played out of position and was heavily criticised for his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Bristol City which saw United exit the Carabao Cup on the 20th December 2017. The player has one assist to his name this season, from that competition which is where he had started the most matches (three). It is unlikely that Darmian will beat the likes of Valencia, Ashley Young and now Luke Shaw, to make any fullback position his own this season.

There has been plenty of speculation linking Darmian with a return to his native Italy, but nothing solid become of the reports. With the January transfer window now open and the player unlikely to resume a place as a regular starter at the club, the £13 million signing from Torino has attracted attention once again from Serie A sides. Despite not suggesting which teams were interested in the player, his agent, Tullio Tinti confirmed that AS Roma were not one of the teams. Speaking to Italian media site Rete Sport which was reported by Sky Sports, Tinti is quoted as saying:

“I have never received calls from Roma for the player. There are contacts with other Serie A teams, but not with the Giallorossi. For the moment, the boy is not for sale.”

As Tinti has stated Darmian is not for sale, that does not always suggest the truth. United are reported to be looking into signings to strengthen the club and despite January being a tough month to conclude business, stranger things have happened. If United do bring in a target in a similar position, it would seem Darmian could find his way out of the club. Jose Mourinho may continue to use him sparingly throughout the remainder of the season if he does not leave the Theatre of Dreams this month.

Darmian was a player that many supporters demanded in the summer of 2015, suggesting that he will be the future right-back at the club and United would be much stronger for it. Like many others before him, it has not worked out in that respect. Granted, Darmian has his uses but more recently, he has been a passenger and that would suggest that he is not happy or able to contend with the pace of the game in the Premier League. If he does not leave this month, the Summer, especially with Italy not partaking in the FIFA World Cup in Russia, could be the period he departs United.
