Tyler Blackett’s and Guillermo Varela’s Manchester United careers are seemingly in jeopardy as they are reportedly two of the players Jose Mourinho is keen to show the exit door to this summer. Mourinho will be looking to make this United squad his own and will no doubt be looking to get rid of those who he deems as surplus to requirements quite swiftly.
However, the debate that is flowing around the Manchester United fan base right now is ‘Would Jose Mourinho be making the right decision, should he go ahead and allow the mentioned players to depart from Old Trafford?’ I feel that there is a divide in opinion regarding Varela, although that there is almost a certain agreement among most Reds that it is Tyler Blackett’s time to leave United despite making good impressions when he first broke into the side.
Blackett broke into the Manchester United first team in the 2014/15 season where he made 11 Premier League appearances in total. During that time, he did not get myself and many others that excited over him, nor did he look that out-of-place, he just seemed a rather average player. Although, despite his breakthrough it did not stop Louis van Gaal from loaning him out last summer, he joined Scottish side Celtic, but in what is deemed as a poorer league than the Premier League respectively he failed to excel and break into the league winning Celtic side. The 22-year-old versatile defender made just eight appearances in total all season long.
Therefore, despite taking a slight liking to the natural central defender at first, I feel it would be the correct decision to let the Englishman go and explore other fields, I tend to get the feeling that a challenging Championship club could be where Blackett will begin to reach his full potential as a player.
Varela, on the other hand, is one that very much splits opinion. The 23-year-old Uruguayan picked up many followers after his quite impressive performances last season. The right full-back’s attacking abilities really stood out in the 11 first team appearances he made, although ever since Liverpool’s Phillippe Coutinho gave him a hard time in the Europa League at Old Trafford he did not make a first-team appearance again. Admittedly, although personally, I am a fan of the full-back I cannot deny that he is quite suspect defensively which is probably what is putting Jose Mourinho off the defender. Furthermore, I presume Varela would struggle to cement himself a spot as the first choice United full-back and he is getting to the point in his career where he really needs to start playing regularly to have any chance of reaching the potential that really does, in my opinion, surround him. Adding to that, with the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah beginning to breakthrough who could really become a star and can do a job in that position I feel it is going to be difficult for Varela to get any kind of game time in the near future.
Therefore, I feel it is the correct decision for Jose Mourinho to allow the two said players to depart from the club and promote other youth talents such as Axel Tuanzebe and continuing including the highly rated Timothy Fosu-Mensah. I have no doubt that Blackett and Varela could become first team players at a fairly respectable clubs, however, I agree that neither will be Manchester United starters anytime soon, and first team starters are what both need to be with the mid-point of their careers creeping upon them.
