Starting XI Prediction: A change of formation and allowing freedom of expression could benefit Manchester United!

Manchester United will be back in action in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford. A chance to get back to winning ways after that gutless performance against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. United need to rethink their approach to games as nothing seems to be working for them. Post-Sir Alex Ferguson, lots of money has been spent by the club and seemingly wasted. There is nothing to build on right now and the players will need to start playing for their careers.

United sit second in the group and in with a good chance of reaching the round of 16 stage of the competition. Not that they would be in with a change of getting much further if things continue to go the way they are heading. Juventus face Valencia and a win for the Italian team will give United some space and if they win this match, they will be in a great position. There are many possible outcomes but United will control their destiny with two victories. Which may seem impossible right now.

Goalkeeper: David De Gea

David De Gea is the best choice to face Young Boys, although Jose Mourinho may rest the Spanish number one in order for Sergio Romeo or Lee Grant to make an appearance, which could be a gamble or the best bit of management Mourinho has done recently. De Gea would be my first choice as there are matches coming up that he could be rested in. He was not really tested at the weekend but Young Boys, who have their pride to play for, could test him or one of his counterparts.

Defence: Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw

United’s defence has kept a clean sheet, albeit against Palace at the weekend. There will need to be some changes to this team following the injury to Victor Lindelof, who aside of a miracle, will be out for this game and at least a few more. Ashley Young might benefit from a rest which may give Diogo Dalot a chance to carve his place in this team. Luke Shaw, who was suspended at the weekend is expected to start again. Eric Bailly has been confirmed as a started by Mourinho with Chris Smalling probably his defensive partner.

Midfield: Fred, Andreas Pereira, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba

The midfield is slow and sluggish right now and there is little creativity. Nemanja Matic has had a run of poor performances and needs to be benched in order to work harder to regain his place in the team. The midfield would benefit from the likes of Ander Herrera, Andreas Pereira and Fred right now. The mixture of experience, creativity and pace could work wonders, which could help Paul Pogba connect the midfield to the attack, which will lose width in the team, not that United play with much as it is.

Forwards: Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial

Romelu Lukaku needs to be benched until he can offer something to the team. Right now, that is not looking all that likely. Mourinho would benefit from adjusting his formation, giving players that freedom of expression, allowing the defensive shackles to come off. The defence can win you titles, but if you have no attack to score the goals, there is little point in defending 0-0 draws. Allowing Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial to play up top together could be a partnership that could fire United out of their predicament. Maybe.
