Team News: Martial starts against Southampton

Manchester United face Southampton at St Mary’s in the penultimate Premier League match. The last two matches have been defeats for United, who now cannot finish inside the top four in the league, meaning the only realistic chance of playing UEFA Champions League football next season will be earned by the team winning the UEFA Europa League in a weeks time in Sweden. United have not had a bad season, winning the FA Community Shield and the EFL Cup – possibly even ending with a European trophy, the only major honour that United have not won in their trophy-laden history. United will be faced with a tough Southampton side, who were hard to beat in the EFL Cup final back in February, challenging for a European place themselves, which could happen based on who wins the Emirates FA Cup and whether United win in Sweden next week. With West Bromwich Albion being beaten by Manchester City on Tuesday night, their chances are much better.

United and Southampton have a history going back to 1897 with the first match between the two sides being played on the 13th February that year, a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup. Since then, a total of 120 matches have been played between the two sides. United have won 63 times, drawn 29 times, losing to Southampton 28 times. Eleven matches have been played between the two sides at St Mary’s with United winning all but two; one a draw and the other a defeat. United will be looking to continue their winning form at St Mary’s.
