Thursday the day Manchester United expected to announce Alvaro Morata – reports

Manchester United are expected to announce the signing of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata according to reports by The Sun on Monday evening. The report suggests that United, managed by Jose Mourinho, will sign the Spanish striker for £60 million a fee considerably lower than the £70 million asking price of the La Liga and UEFA Champions League holders. United had, according to the report made significant progress in the deal over the weekend with reports that Morata’s agent, Juanma Lopez and the player’s father, Alfonso Morata had met Real Madrid officials for just less than an hour on Monday, which were held to sort out the future of the player who is keen on a switch to United this summer.

Real Madrid wanted €80 million for Morata, which is £70 million, with United offering £60 million, a fee which could well be agreed upon with the player allowed to seal his move to the Theatre of Dreams becoming the second signing of the summer after defender Victor Lindelof sealed his £30.7 million transfer from Benfica last month. Morata intervened in his transfer himself a week ago travelling to Madrid from Ibiza, where he was staying on his honeymoon at the time, seemingly sorting his move away from the Madrid club, a club he arrived back to only a year ago after playing for Juventus, a buyout clause being activated last summer. If these reports are true, United fans can stop moaning and think of Twitter accounts with adjectives to celebrate the arrival of Morata.

Morata is currently enjoying the final days of his honeymoon after getting married in Venice a few weeks ago, spending a period of time in Ibiza before travelling to Sardinia. It is reported that Morata will be ready to travel to Manchester to sort out the formalities of his switch and undergo a medical with the Old Trafford club ahead of the squad flying out to Los Angeles on Sunday where they will have a training program ahead of their pre-season tour which will commence against LA Galaxy on Saturday 15th July 2017, although it will be in the early hours of Sunday 16th July in the United Kingdom. There were reports this weekend that United manager Mourinho was growing frustrated with United’s lack of action in the transfer window so far this summer.

Morata will be expected to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Manchester United squad for the new season, which will be some big boots to fill. The player scored 20 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, despite coming off the bench for the majority of his appearances, which could suggest that if given the time on the pitch, scoring goals could well be simple for the 24-year-old striker. United are said to still retain interest in Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic with moves for the pair held up with no meeting point being met in negotiations for the Croatian winger and Matic’s move being delayed as Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wants to sign a replacement before he lets the Serbian leave Stamford Bridge.

It could only be a matter of time before United’s major transfer business is concluded for the summer, with some departures expected. Two years ago, on the day United left for their pre-season tour of the United States of America both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin arrived at the Old Trafford club, securing their transfers from Bayern Munich and Southampton minutes before the players boarded the plane, which would suggest that United could do something like that again, should they need to, of course. When there is an agreement in a transfer, things can progress quickly. I am not a fan of journalists putting a date on a transfer, as that date seemingly comes and goes, but we shall see what Thursday brings.
