U18 REPORT: Reading 2-1 Manchester United

Manchester United U18’s were heated 2-1 by Reading at Hogwood Park on Saturday morning. It was an inexperienced United side with Paul McGuinness fielding a youthful defence, with the home side taking just seven minutes to break through and take the lead in the match. It was Lewis Collins that scored the first goal of the match last United goalkeeper Dean Henderson. The home side doubled their lead just a minute before the break after Amadu Waritay cut in from the wing and found the bottom corner of the net.

United captain Demetri Mitchell had the best effort for the young Red Devils, but Jordan Thompson was the player that put United back into the match from the spot with just 18 minutes remaining. Paul McGuinness’ side had many chances to equalise, but these chances were wasted. It was a tough away trip for the young squad, but the younger players who featured in this match will need to put this defeat behind them, as they will no doubt suffer more defeats during the rise of their careers.

United have literally no chance to reach the semi-final stages of the competition this season with the deficit between second place and United too big to reduce with few matches remaining, meaning the rest of the fixtures to play will effectively be meaningless, giving Paul McGuinness a chance to bring more youth players from the lower levels of the academy, which will probably be needed with many of his players not playing in Warren Joyce’s U21 side as most of his players are currently on loan at various clubs around England and the rest of Europe.
