Manchester United U21’s face Aston Villa in the Barclays U21 Premier League at Old Trafford tonight. Warren Joyce’s side were beaten by Newcastle United and drew against Chelsea in their last two match, added to the draw against Bolton Wanderers and the chances of United making the semi-finals of the competition. United are currently in ninth place on 29 points and have four matches remaining. Four victories could see United on 41 points, which would put them above second placed Fulham, who have 38 points and have played all of their matches, but many of the teams above United have three to four matches still to play, so qualification is not guaranteed.
Warren Joyce will have James Wilson back in his side this evening, after the 18-year-old missed the last few games due to illness and this weekend was named in the first team as a substitute in the 4-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Barclays Premier League, suggesting that he could follow the footsteps of Adnan Januzaj into the first team very soon. Joyce’s U21 side has suffered recently with many of his experienced players heading out on loan in a bid for first team football, but a lot of the U18 players which have stepped up have done a great job.
Tonight I envisage United earning all three points against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, which will keep them in good stead to progress to the semi-finals of the competition and have a chance to defend the title they currently hold.
