United could sign Chilean midfielder this summer?

Manchester United have been linked to many top footballers around the would for the last two summers now, with only Marouane Fellaini signing for the Old Trafford club. One player linked to United was Cesc Fabregas, but he signed for Chelsea last week and it is understood that he was not a player that new manager Louis van Gaal was thinking of snapping up anyway. The Italian media is suggesting that Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal is a target that United could prise away from Juventus this summer, which would be a great signing for the club, in my opinion.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Juventus want to release transfer funds for manager Antonio Conte this summer and with the current rise of Paul Pogba, there is a chance that selling Vidal could be the best way for the Italian champions to rebuild, with fellow Chilean Alexis Sanchez reported linked with the Turin side this summer. The fee the Italian publication mention is £24 million, which would demonstrate some good business for the Old Trafford club, but a deal for Vidal may not be that easy. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and even Paris St Germain may get involved, pricing United out of the market, especially with no European football at the Theatre of Dreams in the coming season.

Vidal is a midfield general and has been known to play in many positions, even in defence during his career, but United just need someone to dictate play and control the game for them and personally I feel that Vidal would be the ideal candidate right now. United were linked with Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, before the English media stated that the club were not interested in the German, before the links started to return this weekend, with Chelsea currently the club he is being linked to. One thing that is for certain is that United will be strengthening their side this summer. I just cannot see Van Gaal using the current squad to mount a title challenge in the coming season.

Vidal played his countries first FIFA World Cup over the weekend with Chile beating Australia 3-1. The Chilean midfielder had an 81% pass success rate and created one chance in the 60 minutes he played for before being replaced by Felipe Gutierrez. Vidal is expected to play a big part for Chile this summer and with their next match being against current World Champions Spain, who were dismantled by the Netherlands on Friday evening, they could be the team that knock the Spanish out of the tournament, which would be pretty embarrassing for the Spain squad, especially as they have taken every international tournament by storm winning one World Cup and two European Championships in the last six years, and were beaten by Brazil in last years FIFA Confederations Cup.

I guess we will just have to wait and see whether these reports from Italy have any credibility to them. Vidal would be a good signing and would no doubt better the clubs midfield situation. Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward are the two people that can give answers, but it will be after the Netherlands are out of the tournament before they start to reveal these answers. Considering the form the Netherlands are in right now, a victory against Australia will almost guarantee them a place in the knockout stages of the tournament, meaning we will just have to patiently wait and see what new additions will be heading to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.
